Kat's POV
"Did you find anything?" I whispered, nervously shaking my leg and biting my lip.
"Besides lots of dust, no," Matt sighed, walking back over to me. I was standing by the door at the moment, too afraid to go any further into a room in case something, or rather someone, jumped out.
I sighed in frustration, "do you think we'll even get out of here?"
"Judging on the fact that we haven't found anything, no, but I'm hopeful something will pop up," Matt answered, offering me a reassuring smile.
I nodded, still a bit doubtful, but trying to use the hope Matt has offered.
"Where are we looking next?" I wondered, rubbing my sweaty palms on my short skirt.
"Where ever we can. There has got to be something somewhere in this old house," he said, walking into the hallway. I followed behind him, making sure not to keep too much distance between us. My fear was still latching onto me.
A few moments of silence lapsed between both of us before I broke it.
"Why?" My voice was a mere whisper in the seemingly empty dark hallway.
"Why what?" Matt asked, his voice laced with confusion.
"Why do you think this is happening to us?" I said, clearing his confusion. I wondered what was so unfortunate about us that brought us here.
"It could be fate, destiny, though usually something good comes out of that. Maybe it's a coincidence, or possibly there is a reason, whatever it may be," he voiced his thoughts and I nodded my head though I knew he couldn't see me. His answer could've been a simple 'I don't know', but I was grateful that those weren't the words that tumbled out of his mouth. Matt had this optimistic air that surrounded him. He always saw the good in everything and for that I was glad that I decided to partner up with him since I knew I would be a nervous wreck.
Just as we were about to turn the corner, Matt held me back and held his finger to his lips.
I kept my own lips shut and wondered briefly what was the cause of his odd behavior. He looked around the corner cautiously and a faint thud was heard. One that sent my heart into overdrive.
Someone was there.
My hands began to shake uncontrollably an I clenched them into tight fists in order to stop them. I bit my bottom lip in order to conceal the whimper that was about to escape. I was afraid.
A few moments later, Matt grabbed my hand and pulled me down the same hallway in which the thud was heard. Before I could stop him, he pressed down on a wall and it opened to reveal a room with stone like walls.
He slowly walked inside, but I refused. When he noticed I was no longer following him, he turned to face me.
"What's wrong?" His eyebrows were furrowed in confusion.
"I-I don't wanna go in there," I stuttered, my fear evident in my voice. He rested his hands on my shoulders.
"Don't worry, Kat. I will protect you," he tried to reassure me, "I promise," he added afterwards.
I gulped and slowly nodded my head, "okay," I whispered.
He moved to grab my wrist and together, we entered the hidden room. A single light bulb hung down from the ceiling, dimly lighting up the room. We saw many tools, but we also saw two girls sitting on two chairs.
I gasped, "Opal?" I recognized the girl from my English class. She was gagged and tied to the chair.
I rushed over to her and tried to untie her desperately. She mumbled something and I pulled the gag from her mouth. "She's dead."
