Chapter 28 –
Merlin frowned. He hadn't been in this sort of situation before and he had no idea how he would proceed. Should he use magic? Should there be a normal response in which he had missed? What would Arthur do? He knew that was a stupid thought, he knew what Arthur would do in this situation and if he copied Arthur then it would worsen it. Merlin had never seen himself as being desirable but all of a sudden, women of the kingdom couldn't get enough of him or his children. He had resulted into hiding in the castle. Arthur had thought this was hilarious and kept making the problem worse by encouraging the women of the kingdom. Deep down, he knew that it was all just due to the magic and that it was something different and new and should wear off. However, he still couldn't help thinking that this might be a good thing, he could find a suitable mother for his children as Morgana was never coming back. Sighing, Merlin rose from the step he was perched on in a quiet part of the castle and started to head back to main area as Arthur would probably need him for something. He still couldn't let Morgana go and deep down he still loved her dearly and he then realized that he could never love another woman again. He also could never replace his children's mother, that was cruel and they should remember Morgana with the happy memories they had, he wasn't going to take that away from them. Looking up from his doom and gloom, Merlin realized that people were hurrying everywhere and looked panicked. Picking up the pace, he headed straight to Arthur's chambers and found them empty. Merlin headed to the council room and found the council men arguing with each other. It was chaos. Arthur was sat at the top of the table trying to calm the men and find some order but he was failing. Merlin couldn't understand what was happening.
"Will you all just be quiet!" Arthur yelled at the council men but he might as well be talking to a brick wall. Ever since word had reached Camelot of bad magic causing havoc, the council men had gone into a frenzy on what they should do. Half were saying that this was going to happen sooner or later and magic should have never returned, whereas the other half were arguing that men should go and remove the threat with weapons and magic combined. Rubbing his temple, Arthur wished he could ease his ever growing headache with magic but he knew that this was not possible. Or was is it? He had never considered this possibility before. Shaking his head, he knew he was getting off topic and looked up to finally Merlin standing in the doorway looking bewildered. He was so glad to see him but also annoyed that he couldn't find him until now. Finally Merlin's eyes met Arthur's and he beckoned Merlin to come to him. He noticed how some of the council men's eyes were almost accusing Merlin of the havoc that had been caused. Clenching his fists, Arthur knew this was not true and he would be glad to have the whole mess sorted out so things could go back to normal.
"What's going on?" Merlin asked still looking confused.
"Where have you been you idiot? I have been looking for you for a while now." He demanded.
"I wanted some time alone to think." Arthur just rolled his eyes, he could never understand how Merlin was so in touch with his feelings.
"There have been some reports of attacks in one of the villages outside of Camelot." He watched Merlin frown and he knew what he was thinking.
"Then why are the council men looking as if the world has just exploded?" He asked curiously. Arthur sighed and he knew that Merlin was going to be disappointed with the answer.
"It was magic Merlin. Magic has been used to kill some of the villagers and reports are that those responsible are heading towards Camelot." He was right. Merlin looked horrified, it took him a secondary pause before he was ranting.
"That's absurd! Who would do such a thing? What are you going to do? You are not going to ban magic are you? How are you going to tackle this? What-"
"Merlin stop!" Arthur interrupted his ramble with a hand held up. This was making his headache even worse. He sighed and looked at Merlin.
"I am not going to ban magic when I have just brought it back. Honestly, I'm not sure what to do here. I was hoping you had some ideas."
Merlin looked at Arthur's stressed face and took a deep breath. Arthur was right to come to him for help with magic, that was what he was there for and here he was babbling at him. Merlin sighed and flopped into a nearby chair and Arthur quickly followed suit and watched Merlin. He could feel Arthur's eyes on him but he couldn't look at him. Not until he had an idea of how to solve the problem, but Merlin had no idea how he was to tackle it. The only other person he had taken on directly with magic was Morgana and that had almost killed him. He also had this feeling deep down that whatever was coming was going to be big and was going to affect Arthur. He hated those feelings as they were always right. He needed to get on top of the problem before it harmed anyone else and harmed Arthur. Realising what he must do, he rose from his chair and looked at Arthur who had mirrored him and was also standing.
"I have a bad feeling about his Arthur." He looked unhappy.
"What shall I do?" Arthur asked.
"Try and settle the council men before I get back. We will need a game plan and bring in some Percival and Leon. We will need their input." Arthur frowned.
"Merlin, where are you going?" Merlin smiled as Arthur started to look worried.
"I'm going to seek my own counsel from the great dragon." He watched as Arthur paled a little and knew that he wasn't a major fan of the dragon. Before Arthur could say a word, Merlin turned and left the chamber briskly and went to seek out Gwen who was playing with the children.
"I'm just popping out Gwen, can you watch the children for me?" Gwen rose from her chair and crossed the room to Merlin. She could always tell when he was stressed and she rested a hand on his arm.
"Merlin what's wrong? Is it about what Arthur is discussing with the council?" Merlin smiled at Gwen, she was a bright woman and he was glad to have her as a friend and a wife to Arthur.
"Yes, I won't be long."
"Be safe." She responded as he left.
"It certainly has been a while since you have called me young one." The great dragon came to a rest in front of Merlin. He had travelled out to a large field just outside the grounds of Camelot and called on the old dragon.
"I know but I need your help." The dragon chuckled.
"You're always in need of help when I see you Merlin." He sighed as the dragon was right as always.
"Someone is using bad magic to hurt the people of Camelot and it is coming closer to Arthur." Merlin sounded desperate.
"What did you think was going happen? Arthur announcing the return of magic will make people think they can use however they want and this can lead them into a dark path."
"But how do I stop it? Arthur has put me in charge of handling magic and I don't think I am the right person for the job." The great dragon's laugh echoed throughout the field, he then sobered and looked at Merlin.
"This was your destiny Merlin, you have created Albion and it wasn't easy. You have conquered many evils young one and just because magic is in the open doesn't mean that your destiny to protect Arthur is over." Merlin frowned. He had a feeling that this was the case but he had no idea how to protect Arthur in the open with his magic. He was used to having to hide it. The dragon seemed to notice his distress.
"Be calm Merlin. You are more than capable to tackle the evil that is rising in the south but he warned, this is only the calm before the storm and things are going to get worse. I can sense the evil rising and it is going to take a lot to take this new evil down Merlin. You need to be ready and you will have to make sure that Arthur is also prepared for what is coming." Merlin felt more frustrated than ever. That told him nothing, he needed to know how he should bring down the evil that was coming as well as who the evil was.
"Who is coming?" The dragon chuckled and then took off to the skies leaving Merlin wanting to throw something at the dragon. He shouted after the dragon once again but he never returned. Sighing, Merlin turned and headed back to where his horse was waiting and figured out that he was on his own in working out who this evil was and how he was going to stop it. Riding back to Camelot, Merlin almost wished that he was still using magic without Arthur knowing, it was almost easier as Arthur was oblivious to the magical evils that were out there. Shaking the thought away, he knew that was foolish and regretted thinking it in an instant and pushed his horse harder and raced back towards Camelot.
