Merlin could feel himself coming too, and he was aware that he was in pain and lying on something soft. Merlin took a deep breath and winced. There was pain in his ribs. He turned over slowly and discovered more pain in his leg. He reached his hand out to find Morgana but came up empty. Merlin slowly opened his eyes and found that Morgana was not beside him. She always waited until he got up. Merlin frowned and slowly sat up, letting his vision come into focus, and then gasped. He was in the chambers that he used to share with Gaius. He looked around frantically, hoping that it was just a dream. Merlin saw that things were still the same, and he pinched himself. From the pain that he felt, he must have been awake. Merlin looked around the room again, panicked. He knew he couldn't be found here as Uther would have him slaughtered. Merlin's eyes then fell on a familiar old man standing with his back to him, making some potion. Merlin smiled fondly. He hadn't seen Gaius in so long and had missed him dearly.  He remembered that their parting had been sad, but Merlin was also glad that he could see Gaius again.
"Gaius." Merlin croaked. The old man turned to face him and smiled.
"Merlin." Gaius said fondly. He walked over to where Merlin was sitting on the bed and sat beside him. Gaius touched Merlin's forehead and smiled when there was no temperature.
"It's good to see you awake." Merlin grinned.
"It's good to see you, Gaius." Merlin smiled. Gaius couldn't hold it any longer, so he reached forward and hugged him close. Merlin winced, and then Gaius let go.
"How have you been?" Gaius asked curiously, as he knew only what Merlin had told him. Merlin smiled, thinking about his life back home and his beautiful Morgana. He then started to panic as he realized where he was. Merlin scrambled to get off the bed and tripped in the process.
"I see that you are still as clumsy as ever." Gaius said, smiling, and Merlin stood still for a moment, getting his balance and smiling at Gaius. He then started to limp towards the door, but Gaius was right on his heels. Merlin had to get out of there fast and without getting killed so he could return home to his family. He knew that they would be worrying and Morgana would be on a rampage against Camelot. Gaius then sped up and stood before Merlin, blocking his path. He couldn't understand why Merlin was trying to get away so quickly. They had a chance to talk, but Merlin was running away.
"Where are you going?" Gaius demanded when Merlin had tried to pass him. Merlin stopped and looked at Gaius. He couldn't believe that Gaius was trying to stop him from leaving. He knew that the longer he stayed here, the higher the risk of dying.
"Look around you, Gaius! Magic is forbidden and let me refresh your memory. I am banished, and if I'm found here again, I will be put to death!" Merlin tried to get past Gaius, but Gaius didn't have any of it. He stood in front of Merlin with his hands on him firmly.
"Now, listen to me Merlin." Merlin shook his head. Gaius should know the risk he was taking by just being here.
"You don't understand Gaius! I am going to be killed." Merlin said, desperately willing Gaius to understand.
"Merlin!" Gaius shouted, and Merlin stopped dead. He knew that he couldn't defy Gaius when he got angry; the consequences were hell, and he knew that they still would be. Merlin looked at Gaius and watched as Gaius's red face returned to a normal colour.
"Thank you, Merlin. You are not going to die." Merlin frowned and then couldn't take it anymore. He wanted to go home to Morgana and his children. Merlin looked at Gaius for a moment and then sighed.
"I am sorry, Gaius." Gaius smiled, glad that Merlin was going to listen to him. He then watched Merlin's eyes turn gold and knew that was a bad sign. He suddenly found himself airborne and landing on his bed across the room. He scrambled up, but Merlin was halfway out the door limping.
"Merlin!" Gaius shouted. Merlin limped out of the room, feeling guilty that he had used his magic on Gaius, which he had promised never to do. He found Gwaine and Percival standing guard outside the door. Merlin skidded to a stop. They turned, and once they saw Merlin, they grinned.
"Hey Merlin! Glad to see that you're alright." Gwaine said, stepping closer. Merlin panicked and used his magic to push them away. It was too much. They would bring him before Uther. They flew across the corridor, and soon, more guards came running into the corridor. Merlin knew that he couldn't stick around. Using more magic, he pushed them back and went down the corridor, limping. He ignored the pain and pushed himself to go faster. He could hear the guards getting closer, so Merlin turned a sharp left down another corridor and looked back to see the guards carrying down the corridor from which he came.

Merlin continued breathlessly, came to a set of double doors, and went through, not realizing they led to the throne room. He had forgotten his way around the castle. Merlin pushed through the door, not noticing Arthur and the council around the table on the other side of the room. He glanced back to see if any guards were following and smiled when they weren't. He limped to the pillar and leant against it for support, exhausted. He heard footsteps coming closer, and Merlin cursed mentally. He just wanted to get out without any trouble and go home. Merlin listened as the footsteps came closer and waited for the right moment so he could use his magic. Once he saw a leg appear, Merlin reacted and shouted a spell to push the person back. He watched the person fly back onto the table, and Merlin glanced around and froze. He had just used his magic on Arthur. Arthur moaned as he got up from the table and stood, ignoring the council trying to help him. He couldn't believe that Merlin had just used magic on him and that he was standing opposite him, looking as if he had just seen a ghost.
"Arthur?" Merlin whispered. Arthur smiled.
"Good to see you, Merlin." Arthur replied, glad that Merlin seemed to be coming around. Merlin almost smiled at Arthur, glad to see that he was okay and not in danger, but he knew better. He had to get out. Now. Arthur watched Merlin standing there like an idiot but knew something was off. Merlin looked as if he was thinking, but he knew that wasn't a good thing. Merlin glanced around him frantically and found that the council had surrounded him, and more guards were coming through the door. Merlin's head snapped to see a few guards charging him. Merlin panicked and used magic to defend himself as he heard Arthur shouting. Merlin made a break for it, towards the door on the far side, which he knew led to the servant's quarters. He would then know his way out from there. Arthur watched slowly as the guards approached Merlin. He knew it would go wrong, and Merlin looked scared. Arthur shouted at the knights to stop, but they kept going, and then Arthur watched in awe as Merlin shot his hand out and used magic to push them away. He watched as Merlin's eyes flashed golden when he used his magic. Merlin then started heading for the door and Arthur knew that couldn't happen. He had to tell Merlin he was safe, and magic was now okay. Arthur leapt over the table and charged at Merlin. He jumped towards Merlin and tackled him from the side, so they both toppled to the ground. Merlin shouted in pain from his leg and tried to right himself to fight Arthur. He then found himself pinned to the ground by Arthur, and Arthur had a determined look on his face. Merlin tried to struggle, but Arthur pushed down on him hard, making Merlin yelp.
"Merlin! Would you stop being an idiot and stop struggling?" Arthur said exasperatedly. Merlin raised an eyebrow at Arthur and then heard shouting coming from the corridor. Suddenly, the doors flew open, and Morgana stood in the doorway. Merlin could have cried with happiness and was so glad to see her and that she was okay. Arthur still had a good grip on him, so he couldn't move, but he could shout.
"Morgana!" Merlin yelled, and he felt Morgana's eyes connect with his. Morgana had burst into the room, determined to find Merlin and bring him home. He was going to be here somewhere, and they had taken him. When Merlin hadn't returned, she entered the woods and found a knight from Camelot. She had forced him to tell her everything, and he told her they had taken him to Arthur. Morgana was furious and was horrified to see that Arthur was holding down Merlin. She screamed and shouted a spell that threw Arthur off Merlin as she ran to Merlin's side. Morgana crouched beside him and stroked his smooth face. She was so glad to see him again as she couldn't bear to live without him.
"Are you okay?" she asked, full of concern. Merlin smiled at her, caressing her face, and began to sit up.
"Yes, I'm fine. You don't have to worry about me." Morgana shook her head at him. Merlin was always trying to find the positive and make a joke of the bad things and that's one of the reasons why she loved him. Merlin then took her hand in his and then looked at the crowd of people who were staring at them in disbelief including Arthur.
