Merlin had finally finished his chores and found himself back in his chambers, which he shared with Gaius, the court physician. He was worn out and sore from where Arthur had dragged him, yet he still couldn't shake the memory of the pain he saw in the bull's eyes. He sat down at the small table and stretched, wincing at the pain in his back. Gaius then walked in and noticed Merlin wince.
"What's the matter with you?"
"I got dragged by Arthur across the woodland floor. My back hurts." Gaius sighed.
"Take your shirt off and let's have a look." Merlin obeyed and took off his jacket and then his shirt. He cringed from the pain it caused. Gaius retrieved his bag with medical supplies and brought it to Merlin. He took a look at his back and found the wounds. He knew that he would have to clean them before they got infected. He took out some herbs and dabbed them on the wounds. Merlin winced from the pain and asked Gaius about the beast as a distraction.
"Do you know what beast we saw in the forest?"
"I believe I do. It is called an Ekimmu. It is a bloodsucking ghost that resembles a pale giant with a bull's head. They are creatures of the old religion conjured by strong magic." Merlin sighed. Everything was always related to magic in a bad way, no wonder Arthur thought it was a bad thing.
"How do we stop it?" Merlin asked quietly, and Gaius said nothing momentarily, which scared Merlin.
"I don't know Merlin. I have only read about them in books, and from what I have read, there is no way to kill them." Merlin pursed his lips. There had to be a way to destroy it.
"You said that it had to be conjured by magic. Who do you think could have done it?" Gaius sighed, knowing that Merlin was going to ask that question. Gaius put the medical supplies away and sat down beside Merlin.
"I don't know Merlin. I really don't know. We will have to wait and see what happens." Merlin sat and thought about it for a moment and then nodded. He was about to say something else when the warning bell sounded. Merlin's head snapped up at the sound, his heart pounding. It meant that something was wrong. He shared a look with Gaius and then put his shirt on quickly and jacket. He got up and raced out of the door towards Arthur. Gaius was right behind him, and Gaius feared that the beast had struck Camelot and was here to complete its goal. He hadn't told Merlin that the only way to stop the beast was when it had completed its mission. They hurried down the corridors and to the throne room where Arthur and the other knights would meet. Soon, they were at the throne room, and Merlin burst through the door. Arthur was standing on the other side of the room with Uther, and they were gathered around something. Gaius moved forward and pushed through, Merlin close behind. They both discovered the body of a knight lying in the middle of the floor with a massive wound to his neck. It looked as if he had been mauled by an animal. Merlin had to look away from the knight as he was too shocked. He couldn't believe that another knight of Camelot had been taken down. They were the best knights known in the five kingdoms. Gaius crouched down beside the body and examined the wound.
"What is Gaius?" Uther demanded, and Gaius looked up sadly.
"It is the work of the Ekimmu sire." Merlin watched for Uther's reaction, and Uther seemed shocked. He knew what the creature was. Uther paled.
"What are they farther?" Arthur asked, confused. Arthur hated being out of the picture and the last one to know everything. He had never heard of an Ekimmu, and he gathered it was the beast that they had encountered earlier that day. Arthur feared the beast and hoped that he was wrong, but he knew sending men out there to kill it would be suicide.
"It is the name of the beast you encountered earlier." Gaius replied as Uther wasn't going to reply any time soon. He just stood there, shocked. He couldn't believe that one had been conjured. He was filled with rage. The old religion and magic had to be destroyed. He knew that he had to destroy it and fast. He would not have the beast bring down his kingdom. Arthur was at a loss with Gaius' words. He knew that his father would send him out to destroy the beast, but he didn't want to put his knights to death.
Merlin had finally gathered his composure and looked at Arthur. He could tell that Arthur was at war with himself.
"Arthur. I want you to gather the knights and go and destroy the beast. I won't have it threaten this kingdom." Merlin looked up to find Uther with a determined look on his face. He knew that Arthur had to go and fight when it would be useless.
"Father, our weapons are useless against it. We couldn't destroy it." Arthur almost pleaded with him not to send him out there, and Merlin wished there was something he could do.
"You will go out there and try again." Uther said, using the tone of the king. When he used that tone, everyone knew that he would not change his mind. Arthur sensed this and bowed his head.
"Yes, father." He then turned on his heel, left the room, and began shouting orders to the knights to prepare. Merlin followed behind Arthur and was also at war with himself. He couldn't let Arthur go out there and die. There had to be a way in order to save him and Camelot. Merlin walked close behind Arthur to his chambers and helped him into his armour. As he finished the last piece, Merlin had an idea. He quickly finished and left the room. Arthur watched Merlin go and was puzzled. Merlin seemed to be hiding something and looked pleased with himself. Arthur felt that something wasn't right. He then shrugged it off. He didn't think Merlin could do anything besides being an idiot. Once Merlin was out of Arthur's chambers, he raced down the corridors and passed the guards without being seen. He knew that he had to get advice from someone, but it would have him hanged if he was caught. He ran through Camelot's gates until he came across a huge field. It was huge. He then stood to the side and felt his power rush through him. He threw his head back and let his dragon lord powers summon the great dragon. He called the great dragon and then began to wait for the mighty beast to appear. Merlin waited and waited and then shivered as he was getting cold. He then heard a twig snap behind him. He spun around and found that there was nothing there. Merlin listened carefully and heard nothing so he put it down to the wind. He looked up and frowned. The dragon was taking a long time to arrive. Suddenly, he heard another twig snap behind him. Merlin spun once again and found nothing. He listened carefully but then heard a low rumble. The Ekimmu then sprang from the trees and went for Merlin. Merlin panicked and started running across the vast field, hoping to outrun the beast. He ran as fast as he could; he looked over his shoulder and found the beast gaining on him. Looking back had made Merlin clumsy and he tripped over a branch and came crashing to the ground. He tried to right himself but couldn't as he had been winded. He then felt the beast hover over him and roar. Merlin tried to look up but was too dazed and knew that he was going to be sucked dry by the Ekimmu. He was going to die and Merlin was scared. He then suddenly heard the roar of the great dragon.
The great dragon was answering Merlin's call when he felt Merlin become distressed. He was flying over Camelot to where Merlin was when he saw the great beast hovering over him. The great dragon took a deep breath, let the fire erupt inside, and aimed at the beast. Emrys could not die. He was the future of Albion, and he wouldn't let him die that easily. The fire shot from his mouth and hit the Ekimmu. The Ekimmu roared and then fled for the safety of the trees. The dragon flew down and landed right beside Merlin, who was on the ground. The dragon thought the worst and bent closer to the young warlock. He smiled as he saw Merlin begin to move. He watched Merlin right himself and then stand before him. He watched Merlin bow his head slightly out of respect, and the dragon did the same.
"What is this time, young warlock?" He asked, knowing that Merlin had only called when he needed help.
"Do you know anything about the Ekimmu?" Merlin asked and hoped the dragon knew how to defeat it as he was centuries old and knowledgeable.
"You mean that beast that was standing over you, ready to kill you? Yes, I do. What is the problem?" The dragon watched Merlin fidget slightly and wondered how such a destiny could rest on the shoulders of someone so young.
"The beast is attacking Camelot and I don't know how to destroy it. I was hoping that you would know." The dragon thought momentarily and then looked down at Merlin, who seemed so much smaller than him.
"The only way to defeat the Ekimmu is to let it do its job."
"Do its job?" Merlin was confused.
"The Ekimmu is a creature of the old religion and must be conjured. It is conjured for one soul reason and that is revenge. They are bloodsucking creatures and will not be defeated until they have succeeded." Merlin pondered this for a moment and then thought back to the woods when the creature had first attacked. It had only eyes for Arthur and only acknowledged the other knights when they were right in its face. Merlin gasped as he realized the job of the beast. It was to kill Arthur.
