The knights of Camelot raced back to the kingdom as fast as they could. They didn't stop and pushed their horses to their limits to save Merlin's life. Arthur still couldn't believe that Merlin had magic; of all people, Merlin had magic. He knew that Merlin couldn't be bad as he wasn't dead, and Merlin had just saved their lives from the huge beast. Arthur hadn't told any other of the knights and wasn't planning to. Arthur knew Merlin would have to leave Camelot as he would have to tell his father about Merlin's magic. He glanced down at Merlin, who was lying across his horse, still unconscious, and felt guilty. He felt terrible for having to make Merlin go away because, deep down, he didn't want him to go. He liked Merlin and wished that he wouldn't have to go. Arthur looked up and found they were coming up to the gates of Camelot. He pushed his feelings aside and pushed his horse faster. He rode up beside Sir Leon.
"Go on ahead and warn Gaius that we are coming."
"Yes sire." Sir Leon rode on ahead and hoped that there was something Gaius could do to save Merlin's life. He galloped through Camelot, ignoring the stares of the people and focused on getting to the palace. He finally reached the palace, jumped from his horse and ran towards the doors. He ran through, dodging the servants and raced to Gaius' chambers. He burst through the door to find Gaius working on a potion.
"What's wrong?" Gaius asked immediately, knowing knights didn't randomly burst through his door.
"It's Merlin. He has been badly injured, Arthur is bringing him up." Gaius felt his heart drop. He always worried about Merlin getting hurt and knew he had been. He just hoped that he didn't use magic and get caught. Gaius rushed about the room, getting things ready for his arrival, and hoped that there was something he could do as he knew that an Ekimmu was a dangerous creature. As he pushed things off his bed, Arthur strode into the room. Gaius looked up, and he felt his heart drop more. Merlin looked too pale. He pointed to his bed and Arthur placed him down. Arthur stood back and then watched Gaius get to work, hoping that there was something that Gaius could do. Gaius moved quickly, pulled off Merlin's shirt to look at the wound, and frowned. It was a large bite and looked nasty. He then went and fetched some cloths and water and returned to Merlin. He sat down beside Merlin and began to clean the wound. It was deep, but Gaius felt relief as he knew the bite wouldn't be fatal. It wasn't deep enough. Gaius kept on cleaning, aware that Arthur was watching. He then got some herbs, dabbed them onto the wound, and hoped it would work. He dressed the wound, stood back and checked on Merlin. He was still too pale. Gaius crossed his heart and just hoped that Merlin would be okay. He then turned to Arthur, who looked concerned.
"He will live, sire." Arthur sighed and was glad Merlin would be alright, but it didn't change the fact that Merlin had magic. He would have to tell his father. He was about to leave when he looked at Merlin once more. Merlin was fidgeting and looked restless. Arthur watched Gaius go over to him and tried to calm him, but Merlin got more restless. Arthur went over to Gaius to help pin Merlin down. Merlin then began to mutter.
"I'm sorry, Arthur." Arthur felt his heart go out to him. Merlin didn't want to hurt Arthur, and Arthur knew that. Finally, Merlin grew still and peaceful once more. Arthur then had to leave the room. He wouldn't tell his father just yet. He would wait until Merlin was better and then tell Merlin to run. Gaius watched the young prince leave the room and was confused. Arthur looked tired and as if he knew something but wasn't sure if he could tell. Gaius knew that it had something to do with Merlin and just hoped that it wasn't his secret for Merlin's sake.Merlin could feel himself waking up, knowing he was hurt badly. He felt his shoulder burning, and he felt like hell. He opened his eyes and found himself on Gaius' bed. Merlin looked around and found Gaius working with his back to him. Merlin was glad to see him and tried to get up. He hissed as he felt the pain go through him. He fell back down, and Gaius turned round. Gaius saw Merlin and breathed a sigh of relief. He was awake. Gaius went over to Merlin and patted his good shoulder.
"Don't get up yet Merlin. You have a nasty wound to your shoulder." Merlin nodded and sighed. He then remembered everything that had happened. The Ekimmu. Arthur. Merlin using his magic. Merlin gasped and tried to get up, ignoring the pain. Gaius pushed him back down gently, but Merlin resisted. Gaius couldn't understand why Merlin looked so panicked.
"Merlin, you need to rest."
"No. I have to find Arthur."
"Arthur is having council with the king." Merlin felt even more panicked. He pushed against Gaius, and finally, Gaius let him sit up. Gaius supported his back as he sat. Merlin looked at Gaius.
"What is the matter Merlin?" Gaius demeaned.
"Arthur knows I have magic." Gaius felt numb. He finally knew the reason why Arthur looked at war with himself. He knew Merlin's secret. Gaius paled.
"How? You should have been more careful!" Gaius yelled. He couldn't believe it. Merlin would be killed. Merlin was like a son to him, and he couldn't bear to lose him.
"I know, Gaius, and I'm sorry. I had no choice. It was either to use my magic and be caught or let Arthur die. I had to save him." Gaius nodded. He understood why Merlin did it.
"I have to see him, Gaius." Merlin said, trying to get off the bed. Gaius shook his head.
"No, Merlin. You are much too weak. You have been out of it for a few days and need to recover." Merlin stopped struggling. He was confused. If he had been out of it for a few days, then why wasn't he dead already? Had Arthur told Uther? He looked at Gaius.
"Has Arthur or Uther spoken to you about this?" Gaius shook his head. Merlin smiled and felt happy. Arthur hadn't told Uther. Maybe he wouldn't, and maybe Arthur would let Merlin protect him. Gaius looked confused at Merlin. He couldn't understand why he was smiling at a time like this. He would be dead if Uther found out.
"Why are you smiling Merlin? This is serious."
"I know, Gaius, but if I'm not dead already, Arthur hasn't told Uther. Maybe Arthur won't tell Uther." Gaius seemed wary. He didn't seem to buy that story as he had known Arthur his whole life, and Uther had trained him to hate magic and punish those who had it.
"I don't think that's the case Merlin."
"Then why aren't I dead?" Merlin had got Gaius there, and he knew it. He felt that there might be some hope. Merlin dodged Gaius and stood up. He felt a little wobbly still but stood still until it passed. He then went to his room slowly and grabbed a new shirt. He returned and tried to put it on but found it hurt too much. Gaius sighed and came and helped Merlin.
"Thanks Gaius." Merlin then grabbed his jacket, put it on himself, and headed for the door.
"Where are you going Merlin?" Gaius asked right behind him. Gaius knew that Merlin was still weak from the attack and needed rest.
"I am going back to work." Gaius couldn't believe it. Merlin had been near death and was already trying to return to work.
"You need rest Merlin." Merlin looked at Gaius fondly.
"I will rest later." He then left the room before Gaius could say anything else. Merlin felt better now that he was walking through the castle, but he still felt weak. He was cold and pulled his jacket a little closer to him. He ignored the pain from his shoulder and headed towards Arthur's chambers. He passed Gwen in the corridor, and she stopped.
"Merlin! You're alright!" Merlin smiled. He always liked Gwen. She embraced him and Merlin grunted from the pain. Gwen released him.
"Yep. I'm back to normal." He then went on and found himself outside Arthur's chambers. He heard a bang and decided it was his cue to enter. He opened the door and found the room a mess. Amour was everywhere, as was clothes. Merlin couldn't believe it. He had been gone a few days and Arthur had managed to make everything a mess. He was such a dollophead. Merlin then looked up and found Arthur tripping over the clothes on the floor as he put a shirt on. Merlin couldn't help but laugh.
"I am gone a few days and then return to a huge mess." Arthur recognized that voice and hurried to put on his shirt. He then saw Merlin standing awkwardly at the door. He studied Merlin and saw that he was still too pale and looked exhausted. He needed rest.
"What are you doing here Merlin?" He saw Merlin shrug and then wince.
"I came back to work." Arthur shook his head.
"You need rest Merlin."
"I'm fine." Arthur sighed. Merlin could be as stubborn as he was at times, and he found it annoying. He then remembered that Merlin had magic. He looked at Merlin and felt sad.
"Merlin, you have to leave." Merlin laughed.
"I'm fine, Arthur, don't worry. I can fix this room in no time, and then I will rest, I promise." Arthur shook his head, frustrated that Merlin didn't understand what he was saying. Merlin was equally confused, as Arthur never told him to leave unless he had done something wrong.
"No. I meant you have to leave Camelot." Merlin stopped. He was stunned and then felt hurt. Arthur saw the hurt on Merlin's face and tried to ignore it.
"Why?" Merlin asked, knowing the answer already. He hoped that it wouldn't come to this.
"Merlin, you have magic. I am the king's son, and I can't ignore it. I will not let you get killed, so you had better leave now. I will tell my father in one hour; by then, I want you gone. I am doing this to save your life." Merlin was devastated. Arthur was turning against him after everything.
"But-"
"Go Merlin." Arthur didn't give him a chance to explain. He wanted him gone before he changed his mind. Merlin felt the tears in his eyes.
"Goodbye, Arthur." He then left the room. He was going to have to leave Camelot forever. He was going to miss everything, including Arthur.
