Four years later
Jehari took a deep breath and looked out into the crowd from behind the curtain. She saw her husband of two years, their ten month old daughter Rosalina, her in-laws, Lyfe, and her two best friends with their families, all sitting in the front row.
Stepping back, she smoothed out the flowing purple dress and ran her fingers through her now black and blue hair.
"You're going to do great honey. I wouldn't have given you this solo if I didn't believe in you."
Ms. Franco hugged her and the lights went off. Jehari went to the middle of the stage and Lyfe's song Pretty Is played.
Jehari got into her zone and flowed with the music, her hair swinging with each spin.
Then came time for the bridge, which so happened to be the bridge of her performance. No one was there to catch her, but everyone was there to watch her.
Jehari prepared herself as the bridge came on and went for it.
Okay
Hair extensions and half splits
Don't make you pretty
Something that comes from within
And not on some man
She be up there with the stars
Shining bright
Like a diamond
So inspiring
Pretty is what pretty does
You'll always be pretty because
You fall but get up
Pretty is what pretty does
You'll always be pretty because
You fall but get up
By the end of her performance, Jehari was weeping. Not because she'd messed up, but because the song defined her life.
This was the only time that she was performing this dance for anyone. Falling to her knees, she looked up to the Heavens as the tears clouded her vision.
I made it. I'm healed, and I feel so loved. I feel pretty, no I feel beautiful. Thank you God for all you have done.
Jehari blocked out all of the constant cheering and jumped off of the stage, running to her husband and child.
Romeo grabbed her into his arms and kissed his wife passionately. He was so proud of her and all of the many obstacles that she overcame.
She looked into his eyes and down at her baby girl who sat in his arms.
"Thank you Romeo." She played with Rosalina's curly tresses.
"For what baby?"
"You taught me what pretty is."
