Romeo

"Are you sure you're okay Romeo?" Jehari asked me.

"No." I sighed.

"Tell me what's wrong."

Biting my lip, I stopped at a light. I looked over at her and saw her eyes filled with concern.

"I'm just missing my grandparents, that's all." I stated honestly.

"What were they like?"

I laughed, remembering one of my favorite moments with them.

"Man, Ruby and Ossie were like old and water, but syrup and pancakes at the same time.

They argued about the craziest things at times, but then laughed afterwards.

(Flashback)

"Whoever gets the biggest fish, doesn't have to wash dishes this evening." Grandpa O said to us.

"What if neither one of us get the biggest fish?" I asked curiously.

"Then you both wash dishes youngin'." Grandpa O said while rubbing my head.

At the young age of ten, I was a curious little boy. Just like every other kid.

I picked up a live worm and examined it before putting it on the hook.

Grandpa O watched carefully as Romello did the same. We all stood on the embankment of the large lake that sat in our grandparents backyard.

Grandpa O was a sharecropper when he was younger and by the time Dad was born, he was able to buy the whole land from the previous owner.

"Imma get the biggest fish." A thirteen year old Romello teased.
