Alia settled herself comfortably, looked at Manik, and pointed toward Nandini with a mischievous smile.
"So, Manik, I'll start from here."
Nandini immediately became alert.
"Alu di..."
Alia ignored her completely.
"One day, when she was just eleven years old. Imagine that. It was raining cats and dogs in Mumbai. You know how Mumbai rains are completely unpredictable, and once they start, they just don't seem to stop. The roads were dirty, muddy, and completely flooded."
Manik listened with an amused smile.
"And your wife," Alia continued dramatically, "wanted to wear a white dress. Not just white. Stark white. You know those detergent advertisements where they show a dress so pure white that it practically shines on the television?"
Everyone laughed.
"Exactly that kind of white dress. And why did she want to wear it? Because it was new! There was some occasion happening at school, and madam had decided that she absolutely had to wear that dress."
Nandini covered her face.
"Oh God..."
Alia continued.
"Mumma looked outside and said, 'Look at the rain! How are you going to go in that dress? You'll spoil it!'"
"She requested her for nearly three hours," Alia said, laughing. "Three full hours! Mumma kept telling her, 'Beta, please don't spoil the dress. You can wear it another day. Today wear something else. If you spoil this one, you'll cry later, and I won't know how to console you.'"
Manik glanced at Nandini.
"And did she listen?"
Alia burst out laughing.
"No!"
The entire group laughed.
"She wore the white dress."
Nandini muttered, "I was eleven..."
"And you know what happened next?" Alia asked.
She paused dramatically.
"She went to school and fell straight into a pit of mud!"
Everyone exploded with laughter.
"The entire white dress turned brown! Within one hour, she came back home, supported by cabir and Navya."
Manik couldn't control his laughter anymore.
"Seriously?"
"Seriously!"
Alia nodded.
"We were all at home and we literally fell into fits of laughter when we saw her. And guess what? I had skipped school that day because it was raining. I didn't want to fall sick."
