Chapter 14: The Culprits

...beep...beep...beep...

Phil listened to the monitor next to Dan's hospital bed and looked at the lines moving across the screen. He closed his eyes and images of the accident flashed through his mind. When their metal snowboard had smashed to pieces, the pair had begun to fall to the ground. The furthest back Phil could remember was him heading headfirst towards a fountain. Then he woke up in hospital. That was one week ago. Then everyday he had stayed in the hospital to watch Dan, who was in a deep coma. And he was so tired he sometimes just zoned out for hours at a time. Phil snapped back to reality when he heard Chris and PJ talking to him. "Phil?" they said worriedly. "Sorry what?" he said tiredly. "You need sleep" said PJ. "No PJ, you need sleep. You cracked your head open on a bollard." said Phil. "Phil's right PJ. You should seriously rest." Chris said comfortingly. "By the way, Phil, Carrie has finally come to see you. She's been working flat out back at the warehouse trying to work all of this out. She needs your eyewitness account of the accident." said Chris. Phil nodded and slowly stumbled out of the door. He was suddenly shocked by a person hugging him so tightly he thought his stomach was about to explode. A muffled voice broke through, and he was then greeted by Carrie's tear stained face. "Oh Phil... I let you all get into such danger! I should never have let you out that day! I'm sorry!" She buried here head in Phil's chest. "Its not your fault Carrie. Nobody could have predicted what was going to happen" Phil said comfortingly. "I guess. It just gets so tiring, being targeted like this" she sniffled. "I need to know what happened, Phil. I don't know how much you saw, if anything. But I need to know. This could be a breakthrough for the investigation." She got out her laptop, poised to type anything Phil could say. "From the beginning please Phil" she said. "Ok. Well everything was fine all day. We all went shopping for Dan, and there was no sign of anything that could possibly pointed to this. Then we went all around London so PJ and Chris could take pictures, and I guess there wasn't any possibility for near-death experiences because we were always moving. Then we went to the Shard at my request. PJ and Chris stayed at the bottom, so it was just me and Dan up there. That we knew anyway." Phil paused "Why were you up there again?" asked Carrie "Well we were..." Phil thought quickly. He was reluctant for anyone else to know about his strange attraction to Dan. "I wanted to see a view like the one at the top of the warehouse." Phil lied. "Right. What then?" questioned Carrie. "Well we were just looking out of the window, and then I blacked out. That's what Dan said. He said the middle of the building was blown out and I'm guessing that's how PJ got injured. So all this smoke was rising from the lift shaft and I thought I could see a figure through the smoke. Then we made this sort of ladder out of desks and chairs and I got on the end and Dan and everyone else lowered it down. The figure had gone but there was this red light shining through the smoke. I got closer and it had 0:15 counting down on it. So it was a bomb. I screamed and Dan pulled me up and said to everyone that when the bomb goes we all have to jump and grab a piece of debris. The bomb went and we all got onto some steel and slid down the building. But then it something stuck out and the steel me and Dan were on smashed. Then I woke up here." Phil concluded. "So that's everything that happened?" asked Carrie. "Yes." said Phil. "What did the figure look like?" "I don't know. Would it be of importance?" asked Phil. "Possibly. It might give us a clue as to who is behind this" she answered. "Well if I think about it, he was just wearing all black. But..." "What is it?" she asked eagerly. "I think... Yeah.. The bomb had a logo on it. But it couldn't be..." Phil whispered to himself. "Phil. What was it?" Carrie asked seriously. "Carrie. You won't believe this. But the logo... It was the logo of the BBC."
