Dressed in simple livery
My hands grip rife with ache,
I hide behind the soft cotton
But the mahogany bites into me.
The doves sit so neatly
Awaiting their cue,
White lilies and roses arranged so lively
I ignore their loveliness, and focus on I alone.
The mud kicks up from beneath the spokes
Flecks dotting me like they do your eyes,
I cannot see them anymore though I wish I would
I wish you'd turn around and lift your veil.
All I have is your softly chiming laughter,
Echoes that I strain past the creaking to hear
And do my best to drown out the chatter around.
All I have is the gentle neighing of the horses
The carriage makes its stop,
The church just ahead awaiting you,
And you awaiting me one last time.
All I have is the first look, the last glance,
One trembling hand on the mahogany
Deep red calling to its own within me,
And the other hand kept pristine for this.
All I have is your hand in mine as you step out
A brief eternity
A shallow forever
The closest I have ever been to yours,
The furthest you could ever be.
The procession begins at last as you descend
And once more I take off
Donning still your livery.
