I can still feel the cheap polyester
Clinging to me nervously
My friends nudging me before you'd even heard my name,
I fell for you on the one day we weren't supposed to be each other.
I chose my impostor such that he was what I am not;
Free, unafraid, sure of the trail he walks
And you chose yours such that you were finally yourself;
Confident, prowling, agonizingly porcelain.
Neon and bass lines muted,
You were all at once my color and my rhythm
Yet monochrome and dissonant,
I ventured to meet you all the same.
What would have become of me,
Of my life,
Of my day,
If I had turned the other way?
What smiles have passed me by?
What tithes would have gone unpaid?
There is no denouncing the pretender I've become,
A year has left me just in hoping to savor your name.
I've no want of you,
Of your ceramic gaze,
Your pantomime words,
Your pointless lingering.
A marionette of a lover
With strings and joints piloted only by disdain.
I had hoped to cut you free one day,
But you would only collapse,
Unable to proceed,
Slack in your knees,
Chipped in the same places I am,
Praying for another Halloween
So you could once again be
The woman I had hoped to meet.
