It seems the night grows darker as we near the village, even though each home has a lantern hung from the porch ceiling. I hold tight onto my piglet, not wanting to let the small animal go and wander off and get hurt. Oliver struggles to hold his two pigs, but manages to keep them under control."How many people live here...?" I whisper, as my eyes scan the countless homes. I honestly thought no one came into the woods. I was always told it was forbidden and no one with a brain would even dare enter.
"A little over a hundred. Numbers dropped over the harsh winter, we lost many due to low supplies and freezing temperatures." He said dully, without even glancing my way.
"Sir, where is the princess staying? " Oliver speaks up, making me wonder as well.
"I already have a place in mind, now run along before Ellie gets upset with you for being out so late." Without a word Olly runs off to this, Ellie girl's home.
Harry and I walk in silence, still tightly holding onto our piglets. After a few minutes of walking we come up on a small building that is made with long pieces of wood. Once looking in, I realize this is where they keep their livestock. Inside are three cows, two horses, four goats, and, at least, a dozen chickens. We set the pigs down in their designated area with a very large hog I happened to miss.
"Where did all these animals come from?"
"They wander into the woods and somehow made it here. We had many more, but the winter killed off a lot of them." I nod my head and Harry closes the gate that locks the animals inside.
"You will be staying in the prisoners hut." My eyes bulge, eyebrows raised. He can't be serious? I am a princess! I am not sleeping in a prisoner's hut!
"Have you forgotten who I am?" I ask, putting my hands on my hips.
"No, but you see Rosie, I honestly could care less about who you are." He smarts off, walking away from me. I stand there dumbfounded at this man and his ways. I dart after him in rage, questioning myself as to why I am letting him treat me so poorly.
"Rosalie! I have been looking everywhere for you. I thought one of those creatures might have gotten to you." Daniel speaks in a rushed and panting voice. He wipes the sweat that had gathered around his forehead before walking towards us. At the mention of these 'creatures' I start to remember my mother and young brother and how they were taken away from me by those awful things. Tears start to build up in the corners of my chestnut eyes before they stream down my face. I miss them so much and can only hope that they are still alive and well.
"Darling, what is wrong? Did I do something?" I shake my head 'no' turning away from Daniel and Harry both. I walk off heading in an unknown direction. I can already hear them following.
"Rose, dear, please don't be upset." Daniel pleads, grabbing my forearm. I turn to face him and say,"It's not your fault, Danny. I was just thinking of mother and James. I miss them very much." I hold back my tears, even though I feel like crying a river.
"We need to head towards the huts. It's dangerous to be out this late." Harry speaks up, interrupting Daniel and I's conversation.
"Do you mind? We are kind of in the middle of an important conversation and I would appreciate it if you kept quiet." Danny smarts off, looking up towards Harry. His dark clothing and knife that is hanging on his belt makes him seem like the type of guy you shouldn't mess with, but Daniel seems fearless until he parts his plump lips.
"And I would appreciate if you would shut the hell up and do as you're told. You haven't lived in these woods for years, you have barely even been in them. You know nothing that this forest holds and that will cost you your life." Harry hisses out, stepping closer to Danny with every word until his back is against a tree.
"Now follow me before I kill you myself." Without another word we do as we are told and follow the grumpy man, with bouncy loose curls. I find myself walking closer to Daniel as the forest seems to grow even darker as we walk towards the hut. Harry stops at a larger home than any of the others, it doesn't look much nicer, but I guess it will do.
"This is where you will be staying. I need to keep a close eye on you so if you try to break out or do anything funny I will be mere feet away to stop you." After what Harry said I realized this is the hut, and the one that belongs to him, that we will be staying in. I don't think I will make it through the night with Harry under the same roof as us.
