But nothing was different. All her toys were still in the same place and nothing seemed broken. I left her bedroom light on and moved over to the bathroom. I tapped the door with the knife gently but couldn't hear anything from inside. I pushed the door open and flung the light on then jumped in the doorway, but again, nothing out of the ordinary. 'Okay... One room left.' I told myself. I walked over to mine and Thomas' bedroom and realised that the door was shut properly which wasn't normal for either of us. I carefully pressed my ear against the door but I couldn't hear anything. I knocked on it softly with the knife and heard a faint gasp from inside, but I couldn't place it with a face. "I'm coming in... And I'm armed, so don't try doing anything stupid!" I warned. I tried to sound bold but my whole body shook as my hand found its way to the handle. I pulled it down hesitantly and pushed the door open then quickly turned the light on. I took a deep breath then stepped into the room. Once again though, nothing out of the ordinary. "Crissy. It's mummy. If your in here, then please come out... I just need to know your okay..." I heard shallow breathing coming from under our bed, and I could tell it was Crissy's. I slowly walked over and knelt down. A quick gasp escaped the source then the breathing stopped. Whoever was under the bed was holding their breath but I already knew they were there. "Christina... It's mum... You can come out love, please." A few seconds passed before I began to hear movement from under the bed. A shaky, pale hand reached out slowly from under the bed and I took it gravely in my own. It was cold and I knew it was my daughter. The other hand reached out and I took that in my other, then pulled the person out. They were light and once they were fully out, I realised my assumptions were right. "Oh Crissy!" I said warmly as I embraced her in my arms. Her whole body was cold and I could hear small whimpers leaving her mouth as she cried into my shoulder. "What happened love?" I asked quietly.

"D-Daddy..." Was all she said.

"He's downstairs hun. You have to tell me what happened though. Please, mummy won't be angry, I promise." She hesitated for a second and got her breath back.

"Someone came... And daddy said hide..." I knew I wasn't going to get anywhere else with this, Chris does as she's told so if Thomas said hide, then she must have bolted up those stairs immediately.

"Come on princess, let's go see daddy." I picked her up and carried her downstairs with her head pressed firmly on my shoulder.

"It's dark..." She wined as we got half way downstairs. "I'm scared..." We reached the bottom of the stairs and I set her down on the bottom step before turning the hall light on.

"That better honey?" She smiled weakly and nodded slightly. "Okay... Stay here for a minute-"

"Where are you going?" She wailed.

"Just in here, but I need you to sit out here for a minute, please. For mummy?" She nodded slowly again. I realised the front door was still open and it had gotten even darker outside so I rushed over to shut it. I headed into the living room and saw Thomas wheezing in the corner. I rushed over to him once again.

"Chris... Give her..." He pointed at Crissy's favourite teddy which was sitting on the back of the couch. I hurried over to grab it then took it back out to her, at least some she had something to keep her company while I sorted Thomas out. I went back into the living room to see to Thomas and find out what actually happened.

"Tommy... Please... What happened?" I said almost audible as tears began to crawl down my cheeks once again.

"Someone... Came..." I helped him put pressure on his side as he continued to answer my question. "I was sitting in here when... ARGH!" He cried out, almost a bit too loud. I didn't want Christina to hear and come in to see what was wrong. She didn't need to see her dad in a state like this.

"I should ring an ambulance!"

"No!" He yelled and grabbed my hand as I reached for my phone. "Call the police first... But let me finish..." I moved back to Thomas, he sighed as he regained the majority of his breath back and began to talk again. "I was in here with Chris while she was watching telly, when I heard the back door open... I knew something was wrong so I just told her to go upstairs and hide... That's when someone barged into the living room from the kitchen with... Oof..."

"Take your time!" I reassured and kissed his head lightly, he sighed again.

"Someone came in with a six inch knife in hand. They were wearing all black and a balaclava and threatened me to give him everything I had... And give him any children I had... I refused and ran straight for the phone but as I held it up to ring the police, he started to threaten to stab me by slashing at the couches... Then I pressed the number nine and he lunged forward, getting my right here..." He gestured to his left side which was still gushing with blood. "He handcuffed her to the radiator... And moved the house phone out of reach so I couldn't call the police... But I had my mobile in my pocket." I stared at Thomas' face and noticed all the colour drained. "Then he ran... Straight... Back... Out..." His pauses between his words got increasingly longer which made me terribly worried.

"I'm calling the police, AND an ambulance. NOW!"

"No! Just the... Police..." He begged.

"Thomas! Look at yourself! If you don't get proper medical help soon, then your going to bleed to death! I can't let that happen..." I cried into his chest as he put one arm round my back and held me tight.

"Okay..." He gasped. I quickly rang 999 and I was connected to an operator within seconds.

"Hello, 999 what emergency service do you require?" The automated voice on the other side of the phone asked.

"P-Police please..." I croaked, as more tears began to stream down my face. I was so worried about Thomas. I moved back and huddled in beside him, worried that I'd lose him.

"Hello, this is the police. How can I help you?" The lady answered.

"H-Hi... I-um... I... I..." I couldn't get my words out and I broke down in full on tears and wails.

"Miss, I'm going to need you to tell me your emergency. But first, you need to calm down."

"Okay..." I huffed as I took deep breaths. "We've been broken in and... My husband has been stabbed... And our four year old daughter almost kidnapped. He's bleeding really bad and has been handcuffed to a radiator, PLEASE SEND SOMEONE!" I started to yell. The situation was getting to me again.

"Okay miss I just need your address." I gave the lady all my details and put the phone down when I was finished. I sniffed up my red nose and spoke to Thomas.

"Hey, Tommy. She said they'd be five minutes tops. That's good isn't-" I was cut off when I looked at him. "Thomas..." His head was rested on my shoulder and his wound still bled. His grip around me had loosened and he wasn't breathing. His face felt cold and I immediately feared the worse. "THOMAS! No! God no PLEASE NO!!!!!!"

"Mummy?.. Where da-" Crissy cut herself off as she entered the room. I spun my head round to her. "Daddy?!" She cried, tears instantly engulfing her whole face. I ran over to her and held her close to my chest. I took her back over to Thomas with me. "Daddy! Wake up!" She cried as she shook him frantically, but nothing changed. Five minutes passed and no police arrived... Also no change to Thomas...
