Chapter 4

Five pairs of blue eyes gazed back at me.
"Cool!" Hi breathed, "It's like I've been reborn. Oh my dear Wolfie-Puff, I've missed you so much!"
Ben was grinning, clearly relishing his powers.
But I felt something different. Weaker. I could smell Ella's lemon shampoo but I only had my normal, human vision, human ears and did not feel stronger at all.
That's weird.
"Okay that's done." Shelton said nervously, "Can we snuff them up now?"
"Wait." I ordered,"There is something wrong. Do you all feel...complete? Because I don't."
"Hmm."
"I can't see properly. I mean, I still have my human vision!" Shelton remarked.
"I can't smell well." Hi chimed in.
"Me neither." Ben groaned, "I don't feel any different except for my increased strength."
"I can only smell well. Everything else is normal human sense." I observed.
"I'm afraid I don't know why that happened." Chance frowned, thoughtfully.
"I can't smell well, hear well, and I feel weaker!" Hi wailed, "It's not fair!"
"Hey guys, I'm starting to get a bit freaked." Shelton gulped, "Can anyone tell me why our powers are limited?"
No one bothered to reply. No one could reply.
It's true I didn't know why, but as for what... That I knew. Though I don't think anyone else realised.
I'll tell the boys separately.
"This stinks!" Ella muttered, "I only have HD vision!"
Depression fell down upon us.
Finally Chance slumped down on his seat behind the desk and buried his face in his hands, "I'm sorry, I really didn't know that this would happen..."
Ella went over to him and patted his back affectionately, "It's not your fault."
"Cheer up, man, we are going to be fine!" Ben said, surprisingly.
Chance looked up abruptly at him with a bewildered expression, then smiled faintly.
"Aww, twinsies!" Hi smirked, ducking in time for dodging the expected blow. "I'm getting good at this!" He added.
Ben huffed, "Moron."
Shelton smiled nervously, "That's one thing that'll never change."
That broke the tension. Everyone laughed.
"Everything is gonna be alright." Ella promised.
"Yeah, everything's gonna work out somehow." I nodded and looked at Chance.
What was that look? Nervousness? Or guilt? What is he hiding now?
Chance noticed my gaze and quickly said, "It's almost time for work now, I think I'd better leave." He got up, "I guess I'll see you guys later. Come over tomorrow evening, I'll see what I can do."
And just like that we left.
We drove back to the island in silence once again.
As we neared Hi's house, we heard an angry voice call, "HIRAM STOLOWITSKI! How dare you leave without my permission!"
"Oops." Hi said in a small voice, "See you guys." He got out of the explorer, yelling back, "I'm COMING!" He ran inside.
I looked casually towards the docks. There was an unfamiliar boat next to Sewee, it was a house boat. "Ben, what's that?" I asked pointing at it.
"It's a boat, Victoria" Shelton replied blandly.
" I know that. I meant, who does it belong to?"
"Oh, it belongs to a runaway kid." Ben said.
"How do you know that?"
"I talked to her." He answered keeping his eyes on the road, "I met her this morning when I was fishing with my dad."
"Can we go see her?"
"Maybe not today, we shouldn't just intrude in on other people's privacy." Shelton said shortly.
"Alright." I gave in. I was too tired anyways. But I looked back at the boat. There was a girl with long dark hair. She was shabbily dressed and was facing the other way. In a moment, she went inside.
Shelton was right. We didn't even know her. For all we knew, she could be the reserved and sensitive type. I resolved to go and make friends with her later.
My thoughts soon left the girl and strayed into our new problem.
They never seemed to leave us...
