Friday came sooner than expected. With planning and packing, and experiencing new memories, it came quickly. After a dog ran down my street the other day, I remembered seeing the raptors turn on Owen. Then I found the garage last night at remembered my birthday and Owen buying me a car. And this morning I woke up remembering the car accident where my parents died.
It's 5 in the morning. I'm all dressed. I'm dressed in all dark colors, to blend in. I had my black tank, for when it's hot. My dark blue hoodie for when it's cold. My boots, to walk in. I packed my backpack full of my black sunglasses, water, maps Lowery sent me, my phone, sunscreen, and Barry has the weapons. Check.
I shut my door and walked into the kitchen to see Claire ready.
"You ready for this, Jess?" Claire asked as she packed her bag.
"I'm ready." I replied, with all confidence. My phone buzzed. I looked down. Zach.
Good luck.
Alright. I looked back up at Claire, who was about to carry her bag to the car. I ran up and took the backpack out of her hands.
"I can take this to the car, if you make me a coffee to-go." I offered. She smiled and walked back to the coffee maker. I saw her take out two coffee mugs with lids before I was outside. The air was warm, the sun was bright, yet it was barely out.
I took a moment to consider what I was about to do. It didn't seem to affect me to much. Claire is aware of the risks. It's not that I'm not, I just have more drive to fix myself.
The memories that I actually have are beyond scattered and random. I'd rather have them than nothing.
I opened the back of the car, and loaded things inside. After dropping a bag of supplies I heard something behind me. Yet I saw nothing.
Turning around, uneasily, I ignored everything causing my head to bang on trunk door. "Agh!"
And in a flash, a gun shot went off. It hit the ceiling, going through the walls. Owen ducked, like Zach and I. The man grabbed my arm in the middle of the commotion and held the steal pistol to my head.
I've never had a gun to my head, but it's terrifying. My heart stopped. Breath hitched. And I wanted to close my eyes, but didn't think it'd be best.
I see Owen stand back up, just about to fire his rifle, until he sees me. My brother hesitates. Then I see Zach, and I can't tell what my best friend is thinking.
"Now either you come work for us, or I put a bullet in your sister's head." He said, calmly.
"Don't" I mouthed to him.
"Come on, Owen." The man urged. Zach stared at Owen, to see what he'd do. I saw Owen lower his gun. "Good." The man said.
My heart rapidly pounded in my chest as that horrific memory came back. So that's how this all started...
Just as I was putting Claire's and my bag in there with them, Claire came out with our coffee. I smiled at her, in hidden pain, and shut the trunk.
"Here you go." She handed me a cup. I smiled in gratitude, and decided not to tell her what just happened. She walked up to the drivers seat. We pulled out of my driveway and on our way to the helicopter.
