The Last Refuge

jessica ennis and any other

olympian on a pedestal waving

a flag

as the dumb masses smile

and feel its their accomplishment

somehow.

every time a soldier is mentioned

with reverence,

every time a country is identified

with and cheered for,

every innocent collective divisive

pleasure is paving the way

and we smile at our reflections

and shoot all imposters,

forgetting our humanity.

its not really the individuals

but the masses that tear

the whole thing down

and make it ugly.

at first its a warm collective hug,

next they'll be fighting wars

and murdering people

for the exact same sentiments,

and they'll sit and smile dumbly

through it all watching it on the news

viewing it as nothing but entertainment

only this time they're responsible,

and trying to redeem it they'll call

it patriotism.
