Hayley and I waited in the office next door waiting to either my dad or the old lady. Hayley was falling asleep on my lap. I looked at the clock and saw it was just past midnight. I let out a sigh and leaned back in to the chair.
A moment later my dad came through the door, looking worried.
“Skyler, Hayley, common, we need to get out of town, I know a place that’s safe.”
I slowly pulled Hayley of my leg and rushed over to my dad, its not often that I have a soft side.
“Thank you for believing me.”
Dad hugged me back.
“I’m sorry I didn’t listen to you, everything slipped my mind when Mick and his wife went missing, then not knowing what happened to their daughter.”
“Dad its fine, just as long as you believe me from now on, I don’t want to lose you or Hayley, and most of all Hayley needs us, she’s only 8.”
Dad nodded. I picked up Hayley and followed dad out to the car.
“Hey dad take Hayley I’m going to get Maggie, I promised her I would take her somewhere safe.”
“Alright son, I’ll send you the directions.”
I nodded and handed him Hayley, I ran to my car and sent Maggie a message.
Maggie-I’m coming to get you, where are you?
I didn’t get a reply back so I decided to go to the orphanage.
When I arrived I left the car running and ran inside.
“Mary, where’s Maggie?”
“She’s gone, Sorry Skyler but no one can save her now.”
She gave an evil laugh.
That’s when I knew something was wrong, really wrong, Greg came out behind Mary and gripped her around the waist.
They’re in this together.
I ran out of the orphanage and hopped in my car, she cant be far, she has to be around her somewhere.
I drove around ever street near the orphanage but I couldn’t see anything, I rounded the corner and saw a crowd of people looking up to the sky, I parked my car on the side of the road and ran towards the crowd.
I saw an elderly lady crying.
“Excuse me but what’s going on?”
She gripped my shirt and brought me down to her level.
“Save her, she’s going to kill her self.”
I pulled away fro the lady and looked up. There, a girl standing on the far edge of the building ready to jump. I pushed past everyone and got inside the building.
Before I reached the staircase I was pulled back.
“Son I wouldn’t go and save her if I where you, she warned everyone that she will jump with anyone tries and helps her.”
“But I need to help her, I need to see if it’s the girl I’m trying to find. What’s her name?”
“Her names Mag-“
When I heard the man say the start of her name I ran off, climbing the stairs 3 at a time until I got to the last floor, only 300 more steps to go.
Maggie>>
I walked down the street, empty and homeless. What was with the sudden change with Mary, she’s been like a mum to me, then I mention Greg and everything changes.
Maybe it was better if I just died, then Greg will get what he wants no problem.
That’s what I was going to do.
I walked along the streets until I found the right building, I entered the lobby to see workers everywhere, they didn’t see me walk past, or to the staircase.
I climbed the stairs slowly, thinking if this was the right thing to do.
When I go to the roof, the cold air consumed my skin giving my gossebumps.
I made my way over to the edge of the building and looked down, it was a long drop.
I heard people gasp and cry with worry when they saw me.
I heard people say. ‘Get down from there.’ Or ‘don’t be stupid.’
Tears ran down my cheek.
I was broken, no one can heal the missing part, I lost my family, I lost the person who cared for me the most, I lost the guy that was my best friend and only friend.
I made a warning to everyone that could hear me, I wanted to do this in piece, I wanted to do this so I don’t have to keep watching my back all the time, running away from Greg, running from the life I live.
I closed my eyes and stepped forward to the edge of the building, my heart pounded against my chest, I can do this.
I blocked out every sound and every feeling, all I heard was the beat of my heart and feel the wind and open space beneath me.
I took one step off the building and left it open in the open air. I brought my foot back and leaped off the edge of the building. The air pounded against my face as I was free falling.
But it ended when I felt arms around my waist, I started kicking and punching the person who held me, but soon enough I broke down crying.
“Shh everything is going to be okay, I’m here now.”
I lifted my head and saw Skyleys hazel eyes full of tears.
“What are you doing here?”
I chocked out but it came through as a mumble then words.
“I promised you I will come back when I’m safe, and I was, dad has Hayley and were leaving town, I came and got you, then I see you doing this.”
“I’m sorry, but it’s for the best.”
I got out of Skyler’s hold and ran towards the edge.
“MAGGIE NO!”
But it was to late, I had already flung myself of the edge and no one was there to catch or stop me.
As I fell I saw my flashes of my life past me.
The happy times with mum and dad.
The Christmas’s, birthdays, holidays and every good thing that happened.
Then came the bad, the images that haunted my nightmares.
Greg…
Then I felt numb.
Skyler>>
When I saw Maggie jump from the building, I tried grabbing her, but she was to far out. I couldn’t lose her.
She’s my everything.
I ran off the roof and ran down the stairs I jumped floors instead of using the stairs I had to see what happened.
I ran out side to see everyone was crowding her body.
I ran over and pushed everyone away, and saw the imposible.
It wasn’t her body.
Maggie was no where to be seen…
