Chapter IV (Revised)

Claire POV

"Is this Earl Gray, Sebastian?"

Sebastian attempts to surpress a surprised look on his face, "My, what a keen nose you have, Young Misstress."

"Sebastian, would you please give us a moment?" Ciel phrases this as a question, but the three of us know that it is an order. Sebastian goes, leaving Ciel and I in a beautiful garden, surrounded by Ciel's favorite flower, the Sterling Rose.

"Claire, as you've been living here for a few weeks now, there are a few things you should know."

"Yes?" I set my Foley teacup down as to give Ciel my full attention.

"Claire, I am the Queen's guard dog."

I have to try very hard to suppress a laugh. I am quite certain that this is a joke, but then I see Ciel's face. Then I know that he is being serious.

"I beg your pardon?" I ask with my head cocked to side.

"Claire, it is my duty as head of the Phantomhive family, to keep the underworld of the country in that we call home in check. Because of this, many people wish me harm. Those brutes are ruthless. They will go as far to hurt you in my stead. Do you understand?"

"Yes, I believe so." I state meekly.

We sit for a minute.

I bite my lower lip, and mumble, "Does this mean that some vile beast of the underground caused my parents' death?" I say it so quietly that I am startled when Ciel replies.

"Most likely, yes."

Before I know what I am doing I abruptly stand and scream, "Dammit Ciel! Is it not your job to prevent things like this from happening!?"

Ciel stands to be at eye-level with me, and calmly says, "Claire you are a young lady, please do not curse like a man from the upper east end. But, yes, you are right. It is my job. I filed not only Queen Victoria, but I also failed you, Claire. Please know however, that you are not alone. I lost my mother and father to the underworld as well."

I sit down, visibly shaking.

"Claire, do you remeber anything, anything at all from the attack? I want to catch the person who did this to you."

"Well, I do remeber one thing that might help."

"Yes? What is it?"

"R-Right before they killed her- Mother, I mean," I realize that I am crying and that Ciel has also returned to his chair, "Sh-She asked them who they were and they said, 'Ark', or at least that's what I heard. Then they stab-"
