I get up and enter the living room, where Jai is fast asleep on the couch. I walk around and prepare myself for what I’m going to say, gently waking him up. Have I made the right decision?
“Mads, I’m so sorry about what me and Luke said to you in the car yesterday. It was so out of context and just so mean; I feel awful. And the stuff with Trevor, don’t worry about it. I called him, and worked everything out. If you go, I go,” he says, leaning forward and taking my hands in his.
“Listen Jai. I’m so sorry about how I’ve acted lately. I’ve just been too caught up in my own little world to worry about anyone else’s; especially you. But I’ve thought about it, and what everyone has said to me. There’s something you need to know-“
“Maddy! I’m so glad you’re up! Come with me I have a surprise!” interrupts Harry, running in and puts a blindfold on my eyes, forcing me away and making me drop Jai’s hands. Just before I’m whisked out the door, I see through a gap in the blind fold Jai’s head bowed down in defeat and know exactly what he is thinking and in that moment, my decision changes. There’s no way I could possibly say goodbye to him.
“Ok… three, two, one… open your eyes!” In front of me is a treadmill with a huge bow, in the spare bedroom designated for the boys, along with a full length mirror, television, and other gym equipment.
‘Wow Hazz, what have you done here? I mean, it’s amazing, but a bit unexpected.”
“Well after the last article I felt awful. So I thought about it, and as there’s not much I could do to help I thought I would just get you this. You know, to keep you off the streets, haha. Do you like it?” he asks.
“Hazz, I love it! Thank you!” I jump up and give him a huge hug and kiss his cheek. “But there is only one problem… where will Niall run?”
“Don’t fear I’m just waiting for it to come in from some other country. I’ve got it all figured out.”
“Thank you! I really mean it. There’s also something I’ve got to talk to you about.” I take a deep breath, and focus on making this right. “Harry, I love you- “
“I love you too,” he says quickly.
“No, Harry, hear me out. I love you but we live in two completely different worlds. You live in England for goodness sakes! That’s a whole day on the plane just to see each other. And I know that you are happy to do that, in a heartbeat but it just won’t work. Hazz, I heard you last night and I agree with you. We used to be so close, and I would love to get back to that, to be able to pull the media along and then cut the string just when they thought they had something. I just miss joking with you, and complaining about everyone to you, like you were my bro. But then you changed, and I changed and things happened, because we gave the media that whole ball of string, which wrecked what we had.”
“And… there are too many more complications. Jai being the main one. I’ve hurt him too much Harry, I can’t just leave him again. He tells me how intimidated he is of you, and he has a point. I mean, Jai has his fans and he has a lot, but c’mon man, you’re Harry Styles from One Direction. How would you feel?”
“Babe, he doesn’t have to make it a competition. And I will move to Australia, pull out of the band, change my name and do whatever you want just to be with you. There’s something about you, that I can’t live without,” he begs.
“Hazz, no, don’t make this harder than it already is. We can still be friends, we can still Skype, and it’ll be just like before I moved to Melbourne! But I can’t just sit here and watch you throw your life away. Hazz, think about it. How could you just leave Louis, Niall, Liam and Zayn? That would break up the band and then what would happen to them? One Direction is your life; you can’t just leave it behind for some girl.”
