Happiness is not a reward—it is a consequence. Suffering is not a punishment—it is a result. -- R. G. Ingersoll

We pulled up outside Luke’s house.

It was on a peaceful cul-de-sacstreet with a whole lot of family homes along it. Luke’s house was a simple yet stunning house as I studied it; it was a little brick house. Luke’s mum I gathered must love gardening I noted as the front of their house was filled with flowers and other wild and exotic plants, the garden was wild and beautiful.

I could feel Luke’s gaze on me but I couldn’t blame him, I mean I did break off mid sentence. He chuckled softly as he gauged my reaction “I know it’s crazy, jungle material.” He said happily.

I smiled faintly at awe as I continued to watch it from the curve in my car “It’s beautiful.” I murmured.

He chuckled softly at me again, my body shivering by the beautiful erotic sound “You should see out the back.” He said unclipping his seat belt and sliding out of the car.

I was searching for the button to wind down the window. I jumped startled with a yelp as someone rapped on my own window. I jumped startled biting as I clutched my chest as I saw Luke smiling happily at me laughing at my reaction as he opened my door. What the…? Wasn’t this the part where I departed?

“Are you coming?” he asked.

“Coming w-where?” I stuttered as he leant in to my eye level his breath caressing my face.

“To see out back of course.” He said happily as if it was obvious.

I blinked stupidly; there was an invite? “Um.” Was all I could manage. It was just like the first time we met; with me being just so talkative. Note sarcasm.

Luke just laughed “Come one.” He said pulling back and walking up to his front gate.

With shaking fingers I unbuckled my seatbelt and followed him up the path that had a cute little iron fence and a brick fence that matched the house’s bricks. I followed Luke around until we had stepped into the backyard.

“Told ya.” Luke said smugly as I stood in the backyard speechless.

Mindlessly I began walking around the yard; around the hemisphere of the lawn there were rose bushes bordering it along with other plants. I followed the path in the top left curve of the hemisphere and followed the pebbles down the multiple steps slowly as all these trees, branches fell lazily in the way, as if I really was in a jungle. It was all too enchanting. There was limited light and as the sun set outside this wondrous little world of its own I followed the path mutely. I felt like Alice in Alice in Wonderland; about to find something beautiful and amazing. Winding a bit more I stepped out into an opening of pavement with its own tables and chairs, their own remote patio. More rose bushes surrounded it, their scent heavy and intoxicating. Straight in front there was a small narrow path. Without question I made my way through as the leaves brushed against my jeans. I stepped out onto more pebbles and there was a tire swing surrounding it. A simple yet beautiful area in the back corner of the yard. Flowers surrounded this other secluded area of magic. Something shining caught my eyes on one of the bushes and I realized fairy lights also surrounded me.

Mesmerized I walked softly and slowly across the crunching pebbles. Hesitantly I touched the tire and it softly spun softly on its rope in the breeze. My lips twitched ever the faintest with a small smile. I could tell Luke was nearby as my back warmed by his stare and the common wave of jitters and fire made themselves known as usual. “My Nan and Pop used to have one just like this.” I whispered softly afraid that if I spoke any louder everything would disappear from this magical world, Luke included. He didn’t need to speak to make me to continue. “Mum and dad used to drive us out to the farm when we were little all the time.” I said my hands lingering on the tire, its greasy heady smell reminding me of the farm.
