Saturday - 6am

“Hmm…” I answered my phone half asleep. Or maybe I was dreaming? Who would call me on my weekend off?

I tried to shift around in my bed. My whole body was hurting. The last time I had suffered like this was when I first went to LA.

“Aly, sorry I’m calling this early. Something horrible happened.”

Whoever this was, now he had my attention. I tried to focus but I was too exhausted to think straight.

“Who is this?” I said and looked at my display.

“Soph, is that you?”

“Yes, Aly it’s me. Listen I don’t have much time. I just wanted to tell you that Lauren had a car crash and she’s in hospital now. I didn’t know who else to call. Brian is doing business in Tokyo and I can’t reach him on his phone.”

“OMG, she’s gonna be okay though, isn’t she?”

“It’s not looking good, Aly. It’s not looking good.”

I promised to try and get a hold of Brian to tell him about Lauren’s accident and asked Soph to call me as soon as she knew more. Lauren was still in emergency surgery and I hoped everything would turn out well.

“She’s gonna be fine, Soph. I know it. Stay strong. I’ll call you back soon.”

So much for a relaxing weekend off. I quickly got up, showered and put on jeans and a sweater. I sat back on my bed and messaged Brian. I even send him several emails. My mind was spinning. What if Lauren wouldn’t be fine? I had no idea how bad her injuries were. What if she had to take time off from dancing? What if she had to give up dancing?

A knock on the door made me jump up. I looked over at the watch. 5pm. The rest was probably sick worried by now.

“Come in.” Tommo, better known as Louis, stood in the doorway.

“Is everything ok with you?” He sat down next to me.

“Yes. No. ... No! I just got a call from LA. My friend was involved in a bad car accident. I have no idea how she’s doing. And I need to call Brian but he’s not responding.” I finished, now walking up and down my room, making wild gestures with my hands.

“I’m sure your friend’s going to be fine. It’s you we’re worried about. Come with me. The guys made lovely dinner and you must be starving.”

To be honest, I completely forgot about my growling stomach hours ago. I was too busy acting out every horror scenario in my head.

“You’re right. I’ll be with you in a minute.” I said and went to the bathroom to splash some cold water on my face. I knew I looked horrible and that as soon as the rest saw me I’d have some explaining to do. I put my phone in the back pocket of my jeans and opened the door.

Throughout dinner I kept looking at my phone. I put it on vibrate because I didn’t want it to ring while we had dinner. The few questions that came up I successfully dodged. Now all I needed was to get that call.

Midnight

The phone vibrated next to me on the bed. I’ve only been half asleep even though I was lying here since 9. It was that unknown number again. Soph was calling me from the hospital.

“Soph, what’s up?”

“They brought her back from surgery. She has been sleeping until an hour ago but now she’s awake. The doctor will be here any minute to inform us. Aly, I got a bad feeling. The surgery took way too long. I’m telling you, something is wrong.”
