Let the War Begin

Aden woke up, I could feel him trying to take over. Felix or Richard or whoever had turned the stupid gun on himself. My white shirt was clean. The bullet never passed through her, but I knew it had left a mark. It had taken her from me.
I knelt next to her fallen body. She never should have died. I see now it was meant for me. Everything was meant for me. A Love Goddess couldn’t survive a heart wound. And in this body I was human. I couldn’t save her.
I felt blind but I could see perfectly. Aden slipped from my mind, I couldn’t feel him anymore, he was gone, the curse had been lifted, it was my will holding me here now.
“Oh, Kenna. How could you be so stupid?” I felt one tear fall and I tried to wipe it away.
Of course she didn’t respond. I closed my eyes tightly as more tried to escape. “I never told you I loved you.” I felt cold. If I just said that, we would be home. It’s obvious why she was here, she loved me too. I was too stupid to say it. I could have fixed everything.
“I should have. This didn’t have to happen. You should have let the bullet hit me.” My fists curled. “You should have let it hit me!”
I guess that’s when the dam broke. I didn’t care. Kenna couldn’t see me. She never would. But it’s not the first time either, so it’s a moot point…
I guess I wasn’t gone completely. I mused. I was still here, but I would never see him again face to face. I stroked his hair as he cried, his white shirt wasn’t white any longer.
“You did well, you know?” A soft voice whispered. I knew that voice. After all my powers come from her.
“Aphrodite.” I answered.
“You two were never meant to be, but it could have worked.” She smiled softly. “You were always meant to die, Kenna.” I nodded. I felt numb.
“Why are you making him suffer?” I asked her. He smiled.
“This pain will fuel his desire to make a change. The titans and the greeks will be forced to war. Once they are at war, the worlds will fall into chaos, but when balance is restored there will be a peace that can never be broken. You’re death has caused this change. You have triggered the most amazing thing, true peace and happiness.”
“What about him?” I whispered. I gestured to Aspen who was still crying.
She pursed her lips. “It will take him five years to start this war, and he will be among the first die.” She paused. “Can you guide him until then? Greet him as he passes to this world?”
“I will be with him?” I whispered. She nodded. I gazed at my best friend for the longest time. “Yes.”
Aphrodite grinned. “Then let the War begin!”
