"It's your fault!" I scream at Ash, thrashing around wildly in his arms. "Y~You put her in the~the lake!" He suddenly drops me out of his arms and stares long and hard at me. I probably look like a mess.
"You are blaming me for this? It's no one's fault, Cassie. If anything, it was an accident."
"Of KILLING her?" I bellow. Twigs start breaking in the distance. I whip out my pocket knife from my jean pocket to only see Monique come into view.
"What is going~" and she stops as her eyes lay on Eversong. "Is she~"
"Dead?" I interrupt, and coldly laugh. "Yes." Suddenly, I have a large desire to want nothing more than to run away like Ash suggested.
"Who's watching the rest of the kids?" Ash asks Monique.
"I put Joshua in charge," she replies. Joshua is a twenty~year~old who mainly watches the Older Group while we watch over the younger children.
"Well...Let's put her to peace," Ash decides. Monique goes to help Joshua as Ash and I dig a hole. After an hour or two, we've dug her a nice grave under a willow tree by the pond. Just like Ash's song. The last words Eversong heard. We dig and place her in silence. Only then does Ash let e cry in his arms.
"Ash, I'm sorry."
"I know."
"I miss Eversong."
"I know."
"I love you."
"I know." I stare into his eyes.
"We can't run away." I don't know why. We just can't. We have to take care of the children that live here. It's where I belong.
Ash inhales a deep breath.
"I...know," he confesses.
