It's Time to Meet the Best Friend

Her name is Paulina. I met her at work. Well, actually, I met her at a hookah bar. Which will become very ironic. At first, at the bar, I hated her. She came with a mutual friend of ours that I just couldn't stand, And I judged her because of him.

Next thing I knew, a year later and she's working with me at the airport and I can't live without her.

It was Christmas Day. My cousin had come over, Rory. She happens to be four years younger than me but acts my age. We were chilling on the couch with my brother Travis. She put on Gossip Girl and I was texting Paulina.

'Hey, Rory is over, wanna come?' I had asked.

And to my surprise, she responded 'Ugh, lemme just sneak out. Wanna pick me up?'

Rory and I went out into the cold with just our sweaters, cause fuck wearing coats in Chicago on Christmas. The snow crunched under our shoes as the cold pinched our cheeks. She was singing as she ran to my Beetle.

"Come on Leee!" she called back to me.

I smiled to myself, hitting the unlock button on my keys. We both hopped in. I slid the keys into the ignition and turned on the seat heaters. Rory hit the heating and a blow of cold air hit us.

"Come on Beetle," Rory begged.

It started to heat up as she played her music, Ariana Grande of course, her queen. I shifted the gear to drive, and went ahead.

"So, we have to get food coloring for the hookah, where can we get that on Christmas?" Rory asked at the lights.

"Walgreens?" I suggested.

I drove on carefully, trying not to skid from the snow or slush. There were only a few cars on the road, being as stupid as us. Rory sang along to The Neighbourhood as I drove, finding an open Walgreens.

We hopped out of the car, ignoring the cool air and running to the door. They slid open, greeting us with Christmas music. We ran to the food aisle and searched the shelves. Food coloring, food coloring, where are you? Rory ended up showing me a small bottle of Kool-Aid.

"Ror?" I asked.

"They said this would work too for the bubbles, yeah?"

The florescent lights were making her look younger surprisingly. I smiled back at her.

"Yeah, let's grab that. I can't find anything else."

We went over to the register and braced ourselves for winter.

Finally back at home, Rory was blowing the air she sucked in from the hookah into a cut-in-half plastic bottle, creating a bubble at the end. It grew as she blew. She pulled her mouth away and it popped, sending smaller bubbles towards the table.

To make that happen we had poured soap and water and Kool-Aid into a small bowl and cut a bottle in half. Somehow the Kool-aid wasn't making the bubbles red.

"We tried," I commented.

Rory glared at me as she shook the bottle in the bowl, getting it ready. She took the hose to her mouth and sucked, the base clunked as the ice hit the sides of it. Shutting me mouth, she brought the bottle to her mouth and blew in, letting the bubble form again.

I had my phone in hand as I recorded her for snapchat.

"Nice, lemme try." Paulina said.

Paulina and Rory switched places and she tried. I took my phone and recorded her on snapchat. Once he ten seconds passed, I hit My Story and laughed.
