After Shia's party, my whole life had changed. Well, okay, I'm exaggerating. My whole life had changed before that. My father had fucked it all up.
I was living with Paulina for a solid two months when I found out he was actually not helping us pay for the rent. The landlord barked at us and sent us on our way with an eviction notice. Two weeks. We had to give up Toby because all of a sudden my father couldn't stand dogs.
He's in a loving home though, so there's nothing to worry about.
About a month after I moved in with my dad and his new-found family, I developed an anxiety disorder. No surprise. This anxiety causes me to feel unreal a lot of times. And it's the scariest thing. But I deal with it. I think. I had therapy, but I have no insurance now so... no more help. I guess I'll be okay. I don't know.
Anyway.
I had just picked up Ruby from work and was on my way to Paulina's house. It was pretty chilly outside but that wasn't stopping us from going where we were going. Katy was already there, waiting for us.
"Where is Sam meeting us?" Ruby asked as she texted on her phone.
I pulled into Paulina's street and saw Katy's car parked up front, her lights still on.
"I don't know, Paulina knows for sure. He doesn't even talk to me dude," I ackowledged.
She nodded, looking through the windshield. I parked just behind Katy and turned the car off. I took my phone and started texting Paulina, asking if I could use her bathroom.
"I'm gonna go say hi to Katy, kay?" Ruby asked.
"Go ahead dude," I smiled.
She hopped out of the car and walked over to the driver side of Katy's Nissan. I looked up at Paulina's house. My phone 'dinged' and I looked back, seeing an 'okay' from Paulina. I unbuckled my seat and jumped out of my car, regretting it instantaneously. I could hear Ruby's laugh from where I stood, so I walked over to Katy's car and joined their conversation.
"Ruby, what's good?" I smirked.
"Oh nothing dude," She shook her head as she kept on laughing.
"Is Paulina coming out?" Katy asked.
She can really pull off a short black bob, that one. And her ice blue eyes always made me jealous. Oh Katy.
"Yeah, I'm just gonna go pee."
I think we can skip this part cause it will be as boring as it is. So we all drive in my car to the Cumberland Train Station and meet up with Sam. He's Paulina's best friend since I think middle school. He's honestly a cutie-pie. When I first met him, we barely even spoke. He minded himself, lived his own life and really wasn't interested in meeting me. But all of a sudden one day he went all 180 on me and became like my best friend.
With my anxiety, that didn't work out so well. Feeling dreamlike most of the time sucks. And when people pull 180's, you're not even sure if it's real or not. Thanks for fucking me up Sam.
But I did my best to ignore that feeling. Cause that's all it was, it was a feeling. That wasn't real, everything else was.
We exchanged snapchats on the train, all five of us. When we got to our destination, we had to walk a few minutes towards the club. It was cold and I was not appreciating winter in Chicago anymore. Paulina, Sam, and I walked in front of Katy and Ruby. They were laughing behind us in their own world.
When we got to the end of the street, I saw the building. My stomach twisted as I hid my anxiety for dancing and loud music. I looked up around me, trying to ignore the following events by eyeing the architecture of the buildings that lined the streets around us. It was downtown after all. The night sky was black, nothing illuminated it but a small chunk of moon.
