I'm moving on, from that whole Lamy situation... it's done. Well it has to be done, as much as I won't admit it, especially to her, I'm still in love with Karma. I'm just-I'm not ready to move on just yet. So, guess what I'm doing? I'm surprising Karma for her 16th birthday! Because that's the kind of best friend I am, not one that sleeps with her best friend's man. As I talk with Karma on the phone, I make up some sick excuse as to why I'm not at school today. Its total BS, she's in for the surprise of her life. As I sneak up behind her with a handful of balloons, I see her looking at fucking Liam Booker.
I roll my eyes as I yell, "Surprise!"
Karma whirls around definitely surprised, "Amy? What are you doing here?!?"
"I faked sick to set up your greatest birthday scavenger hunt to date!" "What's up with the longing Liam looks? I thought you two were through."
"Oh, we are! Completely dunzo. Trust me."
I frown as I see her stuff a card in her backpack. I'm about 50% sure she's lying to me as hand her the balloons and flowers. "This hunt is the best of Karmy Retrospective."
"Has anyone ever told you you're the best friend ever?"
I shrugged as she started to take her bag out of her locker. An idea hit my head like a brick.
I took her backpack from her and said, "Today is your day, I'm not going to let you carry your bag like some sort of commoner."
She gives me a look then looks over at Liam.
"Now, open your first clue."
When schools over we head back to Karma's room which is, wait for it, filled with balls... like in a ball pit! Karma seems excited at first when we jumped in, but it doesn't last long when she finds out the next clue is on one of the balls. Not my greatest idea, no. As we search I catch her in the act of opening that stupid card. I bet it's from Liam.
"Hey! What's that?"
She looks dumbfounded, "Umm... a birthday note from the Erma, the lunch lady."
I grab it and inspect it. "You know the rules, we open gifts and cards after cake time."
I stuff it in my jacket and make sure it sticks. We begin searching again... but I'm less in the mood now. Neither the less, it's still Karma's birthday, so I perk up. When we finally found the clue and then moved on to the ceramic unicorns and the pg-13 movie. After that, we headed back to her house where she was surprised by her Aunt Sarah aka Aunt Sage. She reads our tea leaves as Karma tries to rush through it... she's kind of pissing me off at this point. Her Aunt reads them and gives Karma a message I'm not too happy about. She then excuses herself and heads to the bathroom she says. Except she grabs my coat and scurries off. I follow her and find her going through my jacket.
"Hey honey what you looking for?"
"Ugh, I can't find that note."
"Oh? Who's it from?" Her mom asks as she and Aunt Sage walk up.
"Erma."
"Erma the lunch lady?"
"Apparently she's a fan?"
She assumes the note is lost and drags me with her to find it.
We ended back up in her room as she searched through the balls.
"Were never going to find it Karma. Let's get back to the hunt, we've only got three stops until cake time."
"Five more minutes! It had to be in a ball pit of all places..."
"I can't believe I didn't think of this earlier. Why don't we just call Erma and ask her what it said?" I pull out my phone and Karma jumps up.
"Wait? You have Erma's number?"
"Of course, up until a few months ago she was our only friend. Remember?"
I pretend like I dialed and say, "Maybe she'll finally give me that oatmeal cookie recipe."
Karma reaches for my arm and says, "Wait, wait. It's not from Erma."
I looked shocked.
"It's from Liam."
I smirked, "Finally, the truth comes out."
"You knew?"
"I've known this whole time. I saw you two having eye sex in the court yard."
"I've barely seen him, I don't even know what it says."
"Here." I say as I pull the note out of my back pocket.
"Now you can find out." I hand her the note with a scowl on my face.
"You've had it? I can't believe you would keep this from me?"
She's got to be kidding me...
"Well now you know how it feels. Today was supposed to be about us, but here he is, Liam Booker, just when I thought we moved passed all that."
"Are you serious?!? We just spent four hours reliving our past-
"You two are banging behind my back again, aren't you?"
"What?!? No! We're not."
"You're probably telling Erma all about it." I say sarcastically.
"I swear, there is nothing going on between us. I chose you."
"Choose me? What the hell are you talking about?"
"I knew I couldn't be with Liam and keep our friendship. So I chose you."
"Well, it doesn't feel that way."
"What more do I have to do to prove it to you Amy?"
We paused for a minute before she ripped up the note. Wow... I didn't think that was going to happen.
"There are you happy?" She says as she storms out of the room. Well, as much as one could storm out of a room filled with plastic balls.
Now... I feel bad. Great.
After a conversation with my mom, I texted Karma to meet me at school. I surprised her with the last station and handed her back the note. I also texted Liam and he arrived just in time. I'm being the bigger man, and stepping out of the way. Regardless of my feelings for Karma and my feelings for Liam. They want each other... and not me. I hugged her and walked away with a broken heart. Karma came back to my house after I left her alone with Liam which shocked the hell out of me. I surprised her with these necklaces we were trying to win in the sixth grade and she loved them. We hugged it out but I still felt conflicted. Yes, I love Karma, she's my best friend and I want her to be happy. But so do I, I deserve to happy. Now, I'm not so sure who that happiness should be shared with.
When the clock strike 12, Karma went home and I went upstairs to my room. I changed into my PJs and as I was getting in to bed my phone vibrated. I gasped, it was a text from Liam.
"Amy, thanks for tonight. You didn't have to do that, but you did. You are an awesome friend to Karma and an awesome friend to me."
I put the phone back on my dresser and laid down. I'm an awesome friend... I'll always be just an awesome friend. I flipped over and sobbed into my pillow. Relationships sucks and so does moving on.
