Finally getting out of that stuffy office felt like a miracle.
I discovered the guy who saw my headphones cord is the Elliot that Angela was talking about earlier. Ollie had gone over to talk to him, and I got the impression the guy likes Ollie as much as I do. But then again, during my short time at AllSafe I've never really known the guy to look anything other than quiet and uninterested in other people.
I didn't have to worry about him calling me out for my lack of an iPod or MP3, he never tried asking me about it.
After work, I picked up some Chinese and headed back to my small two bedroom flat only a couple blocks from work. I wasn't surprised to find my new place was already occupied. I knew someone would be paying a visit before she left town.
"Chloe." I smile lightly, setting the food down to give a wave of a hello. She grins, before coming over to give me a small hug.
Not many people get a second chance at life. My entire world began to crash and burn when I was ten. My parents has died two years earlier. Mom of cancer, dad of a car accident a few months afterwards. It left my older sister and I to fend for ourselves. The company my dad worked for found a clever loophole to screw us over in his life insurance policy. We didn't get a dime of what should've been two-hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Sarah and I ended up losing our family house, losing the two cars my parents owned, and drowning in massive load of debt due to hospital bills for our mom.
Strangely, life didn't start getting worse until after all of that tragedy. Sarah moved us out to the city. She attempted to get work, but she fell into the wrong crowd. It was hard to find a job that would hire a high school drop-out.
That left her with the gritty jobs no one truly wants their eighteen year old touching. She took up stripping. Maybe even hooking, but she never let on to me how dark her life had gotten. She tried hard to shield me from monsters and darkness that had snuck their way around her.
But her job choice only took her down a darker path in life. Sarah got involved with a very dangerous man. He was the one who got her hooked on pills. One day, she just disappeared. She left me three-hundred and fifty dollars in our dingy one bedroom apartment, and then vanished. Later internet searching revealed Sarah Maverick died of a drug overdose a year after she took off.
I spent years in the foster care system after Sarah left. Once I was thrown out onto the streets by seventeen, I took to thieving and breaking and entering to survive. But I heard stories. Sories of how people gained revenge after a great miscarriage of justice left them vulnerable and alone. It's how I joined Raven-Hood.
Joining the club saved me. It gave me hope that things can improve. No matter how grim things can get, you control your own life.
The club's extremely low-key. It's a place that teaches control, and how to gain power. A place that not only taught extreme martial arts, but also granted me the ability to become a clever chameleon in order to get close to my ultimate target. The only catch, you needed to return the favor of training by committing certain acts for the club.
"I thought I would stop by to hand deliver this." Chloe announces, brandishing a silver key from her pocket. "It's for a safe box down at the bus station on 33rd. The number's on the back. Cross wants you to hand deliver anything you may need looked at by him. His people will make sure its delivered back to him safely."
"You needed to come all the way here just to give me a key?" I ask with slight skepticism.
She gives a small shrug. "Cross doesn't want anything that a member of E Corp can gain access too. Keep in mind who you're dealing with, Nat. These are hackers. Some of the most brilliant minds you'll ever come across."
I lightly wave this off. "None of these people are more talented than Cross."
I feel this is the truth. Nolan Thompson, aka CrossWire, is a genius software inventor and computer hacker. I have no doubt his previous usage of black-hat hacking is far more superior than anything I'll come across in my mission against E Corp.
E Corp.....Full of the diabolical individuals thirsting for power. The reason my sister and I were denied my fathers rightfully deserved insurance money.
Part of the reason I lost Sarah...
Chloe raises an eyebrow. "To be honest, I also wanted to do one last check of self control, Natalia."
I nod grimly, realizing the reason she would be worried. To her and other superiors of Raven-Hood, I'm but a baby fresh off of revenge academy. It's known fully well I was once a hot-headed firecracker, so it was worrisome to send me out into the field without any help. In other circumstances, I've always had backup to lean on incase I needed someone on a mission. To test my abilities, Chloe has been giving me constant tests to help prove I'm capable of this mission with no more training.
Brandishing a lighter, Chloe gives me a small nod.
Clenching my jaw, I remove my flats and my ankle socks. Raising my leg to give my bare foot pointing outwards, Chloe steps closer, flicking the lighter on before bringing the flame to my heel.
While the small flame dances across my bare skin and sends an overwhelming amount of pain coursing through my body, I keep a completely straight face. "So, how are things going with you and Ben?" I ask with a grin.
This pain is nothing. I've learned long ago to keep a positive and upbeat attitude when inside I feel as though I'm being destroyed by unbearable pain.
Chloe can't help but grin back at me. After a few long seconds of satisfaction, she flicks the lighter off, giving a slight nod of approval.
"Nice one...I remember your first time...You cried for about an hour."
