A/N Chapter song: "The wolf" by Fever Ray
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~All night and even to Monday morning I tried to remain calm--I really did. But it was impossible. Within the course of a day I was somehow wrangled into helping some group branding themselves as fsociety in stealing an important flash drive.
I'm not even certain why I agreed to it. It was mostly the mere thought of Tyrell Wellick's head on a silver platter that was intriguing--but there were other things I should've considered before I agreed. Mainly, my cover at AllSafe, and my duties to RavenHood.
Can I even consider intertwining the two? What if I'm being set up by the Mr. Robot to take the wrap for something he and Darlene are planning?
Whatever the flash drive is that Darlene wants, it must be of importance.
I wasn't exactly privy to details. All I was given is instructions of where to show up on Wednesday night. After that, I'd be given more exclusives details as to what happens from there. All I really know is I'll be expected to break into a secure facility using certain skills of mine.
"Thalia! How come you didn't show up on Saturday, girl?"
Even on a good day I wouldn't have wanted to deal with Ollie Parker. Today, his irritating voice sounds as similar as metal nails on a chalkboard.
"I was a little nervous being around so many people." I mumble in a lie, typing away on my keyboard as I solve some lame proxy matter.
My answer doesn't even cause Ollie to bat an eyelash. "Well you'll never know if ya don't try-right? Wanna come grab some dinner with me sometime this week, to break you out of your shell?"
Alone? Minus Angela? For a strange reason, I'm feeling he's implying a date type of thing. He can't be serious--his girlfriend is sitting only four cubicles away from me.
"I'm going to be busy--family stuff." I nod lightly; hoping he'll take the hint.
Ollie's face falls in a light frown before he appears to bounce back. "Oh! I forgot to ask--how come you're not on Facebook?"
Even though I keep a natural look painted on me; inwardly I want to yell; How come you're under the impression I want to talk to you?
"It's never really interested me." I offer quietly, returning to my keyboard. Typing away, I feel satisfied as soon as Ollie leaves the area. My satisfaction comes to a halt when a familiar blonde settles herself next to me, wearing a heavy frown.
"Thalia! How come you didn't show up to my party?"
In a way I can't figure out what's worse. Being blackmailed by Mr. Robot to work for fsociety, or working this ridiculous cover for RavenHood.
"Nat, are you alright?" Chloe asks over the receiver.
"I'm...fine--why?"
A low snort comes from Chloe's end. "Well now I know you're bullshitting. No woman ever says fine and is actually fine-"
"Is there something you want, Cut-Throat?" I ask in a meaner voice than I intended. My theory was simple. Maybe if I used her code name she would get the hint I don't want to talk.
Chloe seems to register that I'm in a bad mood, but it doesn't waver her off course. "Does this have something to do with the fight you had with Nolan--he sounded kind of upset about it..."
"Believe it or not, not everything in my pitiful existence has to with CrossWire or any other member of RavenHood." I snap in retort, rubbing my eyes wearily. Being so absorbed in the fsociety drama, I don't even find myself caring about my rudeness to Chloe.
"Well someone had a can of bitchy this morning." Chloe laughs, uncaring of my negative attitude.
"Today's just one of the days I miss my sister." I answer lightly; halfway being honest. Sarah was the kind of older sister who could make you smile even though you felt like crying. She was just a sweetheart of a person who always cared for your feelings. It's difficult days like this that cause me to miss her most.
Chloe says nothing; knowing how it feels to miss family. "I hear ya. Wanna talk about it?"
There's not really a way to say I'm being blackmailed into helping a practically anonymous hacking group steal a flash drive. "No, thanks." I say lightly, thankful Chloe isn't here in person. She'd be able to tell I'm lying my ass off just from my facial expression. "Well, I have to get going--I was going to get a long run in before my nightly crunches. Will I hear from you soon?"
"Course. I'm really close from hitting my mission--by the way, we're getting new throwaway phones, so don't go giving your number out to all the friends you're making." Chloe snickers, obviously referring to my annoying coworkers.
"Hardy har har." I reply, before stopping in place. I had been walking around my small apartment, talking to Chloe or just staring at a wall. There's not much in my apartment. It came furnished. Besides the one bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room, there's nothing in it. I left my laptop idly sitting on the couch where I left it. As I looked to it; I find a light is on.
After being hacked, I installed an app that allows me to see if a person ever hacks into the laptop. That way, it'll glow bright red when someone's hacked it. My laptop glows a rosy red right next to the area where the camera is on top of my computer screen. As the computer next glows a lime green, my eyes widen in surprise. Someone didn't just hack my computer just now--they hacked my webcam.
"Gotta go--ttyl." I reply, hitting the phone off. Luckily it looks like it was newly turned on, so the hacker didn't catch me referring to Chloe by her actual name or her code name.
Walking towards the laptop, I feel somewhat tempted to start smashing it. It's difficult to be hacked when you have no form of technology that's hackable. But I shouldn't really feel alarmed-I already know who it who's watching me. Getting on bended knee, I grit my teeth as I watch the webcam, knowing the person on the other side can see and hear me perfectly.
Tucking a loose strand of hair back into my pony tail, I shrug lightly at the camera. "I'll see you soon, Elliot."
