Lily's POV

I woke up the following morning cursing myself for showing James that I was vulnerable. Weak. Last night, after the cry/hug session, he finally let go, got me a cup of water, and put the hiccuping me to bed as if I were a child or something. But I was too tired to stop him. Or maybe I didn't want to stop him. I had not even told Alice and Marlene about what had happened, and I told them everything. Regardless, I knew one thing: James Potter was to be avoided at all costs.

I made it through three whole days with out speaking to him. The following morning he came to me at breakfast and say, "All right, Lily?" I stared intently at my plate as if it were the most fascinating thing I had ever seen. He got the message and walked away.

Later on, he approached me again in our Common Room. I simply got off the couch, grabbed my books, and went to my room, closing the door behind me as loudly as possible without actually slamming it.

It went like this on Wednesday and Thursday as well. However, it had not escaped my notice that we had a prefect's meeting on Friday, followed by the Friday night patrol of all the usual snogging spots. The worst part of this was that it would require me to be alone with James for an extended period of time, and a conversation would almost certainly ensue.

That evening, at dinner, Alice looked at me funny. "Lils, what's bothering you?" she asked.

"Oh, it's nothing," I said.

"Does 'nothing' have thick brown hair that grows all over the place, and round glasses, and-"

Marlene cut in. "Abs? Rock hard Quidditch-player abs?"

"You're avoiding him like the plague!" Alice added.

I rolled my eyes. "No, nothing is actually nothing," I said.

Marlene pouted. "If it's not Potter, what is it?"

"Not telling," I said with a smirk.

Suddenly, Marlene looked at her watch. "Merlin, I have to go!" Then she dashed out of the Great Hall without another word.

"That was certainly odd," said Alice.

I looked around. A little ways away sat three of the four Marauders. James caught me looking, though, and I turned away quickly.

"Sirius isn't there," I muttered to Alice.

"Did Potter do anything to you?" she muttered back.

"MERLIN, for the LAST TIME, it has nothing to do with James!" I nearly shouted.

"You called him James," she marveled in a strange whisper.

"Yeah, so?" I said. But I had to admit, this time last year, I absolutely LOATHED him. He was an annoying prick who wouldn't stop asking me out. "I gotta go," I said. "Prefect's meeting."

I reluctantly trudged to the Charms classroom, where we were scheduled to meet for the prefect meeting. When I entered the room, it was empty, except for a single person. At first, I thought it was James. I was wrong. It was Severus Snape. He was, unfortunately, a Slytherin prefect, so it's not like I could kick him out or anything.

"Lily, I just wanted to--" he began.

"Cut the crap, Sev," I interrupted. "I thought you didn't associate with 'filthy Mudbloods'. Seeing the crowd you hang with these days, I wouldn't be surprised if you just showed up here to curse me!"
