After she had served Louis' tea, Maria rushed back to the kitchen as fast as she could. It was true that she was supposed to bring it, but she sorts of used it to her advantage to spy on the monster's plans. She still felt the shivers run up and down her spine as she thought of Nicholas whispering to her ear. Maria bit her lip, and desperately tried to calm herself down, her breathing starting to quicken.
"Stop it!" Now, Maria was angry at herself, the other maids must have thought that she was mad, walking stubbornly down the hall with a big frown on her face. Maria herself thought that she was going insane. The woman entered the kitchen, and tried to force a smile on her face. She put the dirty dishes in the sink, and started to scrub them with fury. She noticed a few servants near her, who stared at her with wide eyes. Now that she mentioned it, the servants seemed to have their eyes on her constantly these days. It made her nervous, unsure of who was one of the monsters, and who wasn't. As she was done drying the dishes, Maria put them back on the cupboards, Jenna passed by her with a sharp walk. Her friend hadn't even stopped to saw hello.
"Jenna?" The blonde kept walking away, and turned in the hallway. Maria quickly threw her fabric on the counter, and rushed after her friend. "Jenna!" She tapped on her friend's shoulder, making her jump out of her odd trance.
"Are you okay?" Maria asked, stopping to catch her breath. "I was screaming after you all the way from the kitchen!"
"Oh, sorry." Jenna said, dryly. Maria frowned at the blonde's behavior, and stood in front of her, blocking her from walking away. "You seem weird today." The woman stated.
"Ah, I've just been busy lately." Maria frowned, and followed her friend, who had slithered between her and the wall. Jenna went in her room, and started to unbraid her hair. Her fingers, usually nimble, were clumsy and made a knot in her hair. Jenna cursed under her breath, and glared angrily at the mirror.
"Here, I'll take care of it'" Maria said, carefully taking Jenna's hair in her hands. The blonde sighed, and rubbed her tired eyes. She was usually always in a cheerful mood, obviously, there was something gnawing at her mind. Perhaps, something about the monsters.
Wasn't that what Louis was talking about with Nicholas? There was supposedly a man coming to watch her. She hated that they had to give her a babysitter, but of course she understood why. The woman was sniffing into their secrets and sneaking around them. She didn't trust them yet, and was almost certain that she would never trust them again. Maybe only Jenna. Maria kept her silence, sensing the tense air in the room, as she detangled her friend's hair.
"There." The woman put the comb on the boudoir, and took a step back. "All done."
"Thank you." Jenna mumbled in a cold voice. Maria sat on Jenna's fluffy bed, and looked at Jenna, who finished prepping her hair.
"You know you can tell me anything, right?" Maria said in a soft voice. Jenna had always been there for her, and she could feel that this was the time for her to be there for Jenna.
"There is nothing wrong, just drop it." Jenna snarled. Maria looked down at her feet, feeling a pinch in her heart. She had considered the bubbly blonde to be one of her only friend, if not the closest friend she had here, with the only exception for Klaus, the goofy cook.
"Fine. I'll leave you alone." She said, feeling sad. Jenna didn't say anything to apologise, but pinched her lips and paced in her room. It hurt Maria, knowing that there was clearly something wrong, and that she couldn't help. She went to her room, and changed into casual clothes, since her work around the mansion was done for the day. Having nothing to do, Maria decided to walk around the house. She looked out the one of the living room's window, giving a nice view from the driveway, decorated with flowers, and well kept trees. As the gardener waved at Maria, a black car drove up the road, and parked in front of the steps of the mansion. John, the family driver, stepped out of the car, and politely opened the door to a handsome man, about Maria's age. He had jet black hair, and brown eyes, and was dressed simply, but elegant. He didn't seem to be to serious kind of guy, who Maria thought Nicholas would have surrounded himself with, as friends. He walked to the door with a big grin plastered on his face. He had to be the guard sent to watch over Maria.
