As soon as Nicholas heard the scream, he hurriedly made his way to the direction that it came from, leaving Klaus to help Jenna. When he arrived, Nicholas, with the help of his wolf, deciphered a few voiced echoing through the dark forest. His heart skipped a beat at the sound of the voice of his mate. He was about to jump to her side when he heard a second deeper voice, stopping himself in his track. Anger and jealousy boiled deep inside him, his eyes glaring red, and sharp canines ready to rip through the flesh of the intruder. She was with another male.
That thought bounced in his mind endlessly, and he was jealous that the man was able to look at his mate, to see her bright smile, sweet smile, with hypnotizing green eyes, and not him. He was supposed to be with her, and no one else. Now more than ever, he craved her touch like a fish needed to swim in water, like a bird wanted to sing, or fly; like a wolf needed his mate. He balled his fists, his claws piercing his skin, letting his blood slowly drip from his palms.
He crouched and crawled behind a few thick bushes, fully camouflaged behind trees, and he decided to take the intruder by surprise. Nicholas was still unsure of what that man looked like, or even what he was. He sure didn't smell like a werewolf. The closer he got to them, he was finally able to hear their conversation clearly, enough to find out that he was the one behind the murder of Ally and Johnny. How Maria was still at his side, he had no idea.
"They are just bloody dogs..." After those words had been spoken, Nicholas couldn't hold his anger anymore. How dare this stranger murder Maria's friends, and then insult them and his people. He bounced to his feet with a furious snarl on his face. Nicholas' eyes twitched a little when he realised that it was a dwarf instead of another human, or a werewolf. He nearly started laughing, and rolling to the ground.
"Who are you to call us dogs, dwarf?" He said, using the most confident and powerful voice he could mutter. "We can get that thing easy." He whispered to himself.
"Don't underestimate the Half-Man. They are agile warriors; it runs in their blood since the beginning of time." His wolf stated.
"Aren't you happy we found her?" He asked his wolf, surprised that he was so calm. "Yes." Nicholas shook his head with a smirk, he would never understand that thing ever. The dwarf had his axe out and was ready to fight him, as Maria was staring at him with those big green eyes. The short man leaned over to the girl, and whispered in his ears.
"Is he really talking to himself?"
"Yeah. Werewolves do that sometimes." Maria explained in a calm voice. Nicholas' lip curled in amusement, showing his sharp teeth. The dwarf jumped between him and Maria with his metal axe pointed at the wolf's throat. The short man's eyes grew dark with hatred, and he cringed, deforming his usually chuckling face. Kurog slowly stepped closer, showing no fear in front of Nicholas, who stood completely unfazed by the dwarf.
"Just stay back. It would take me long for this one." He spat viciously. Nicholas's smirk quickly melted from his lips, to be replaced by a snarling face. He dropped his guns to the ground, and stepped closer to the dwarf, readying himself to shift at any second. He puffed his chest as a low growl erupted from his throat. Maria gasped, and ran between the three of them, raising her arms to block them.
"Kurog! Nicholas! Stop it!" She sternly pleaded. Her eyes were wide with fear, since she knew very well that if Nicholas lost his temper, it would quickly turn into another bloodbath. Kurog was taken aback by Maria taking the side of the wolves. He never thought of them to be anything other than bloodthirsty killing machines, and he refused to believe otherwise. He had sadly seen too much horror from the acts of their dark sides for him to forgive them. Staring at the monster before him, he gripped his axe tighter and frowned at him, determinated not to let them harm him once again. Maria turned to the dwarf, and daringly put her hand on the handle of Kurog's weapon. He looked at her, holding her gaze for a second or two. When he saw the look in her eyes, his eyes softened, not able to resist her pleading eyes any longer. He sighed and dropped his axe to the ground. Nicholas stopped his growling, but refused to stay away any longer. He put a stern hand on her shoulder, as if to put a claim on her in front of the dwarf, and his wolf rejoiced at the small contact between him and his mate. Nicholas started to regain his control, assured that Maria was fine, and his eyes turned back to their natural colour.
