Chapter 6. Run

Kayla's POV

" so you two are brother and sister?" Alby asked me and newt. We nodded and he sighed.

" well newt she's right, it's not your choice but Kayla, newt is also right. This is not a job someone would want." He said and I walked closer to him.

"But I do want this job Alby! I have what it takes. I'm strong, fast. Please just give me a chance!" I begged and he sighed.

"Okay you run, jump over the obstacles." Alby said as everyone crowded around us. Alby finally let me try out to be a runner. I nodded and got ready. I looked over to fine Thomas and newt but they weren't here.

"Go!"

I ran as fast as I could. I jumped over a hay stack and another. I went to the edge of the obstacle course and turned around and copied my moves.

When I was done I looked over at Winston who was keeping time.

"43 seconds." He said and everyone cheered. I smiled and saw newt out of the corner of my eye, leaning against a tree.

Alby walked up to me and patted my back.

" you'll go on your first run with Minho in the morning." He said and I nodded. Minho walked up got me and hugged me.

"I'm glad to have someone with me, partner" he said and awkwardly punched my shoulder. I laughed and walked to my room and went to sleep.

Next morning

" ready." Minho said and I nodded.

"Wait Kayla." I turned around and saw Thomas. I walked up to him and he sighed.

" just be careful.. Pease." He said and I put my hand on his arm.

" you have nothing to worry about tom." I said and he hugged me. I smiled and heard someone cough.

" um Kay, we have to go." Minho said and I nodded. I kissed Thomas on the cheek and ran next to Minho. When my foot touched the cement floor of the maze a gust of wind him my face. I started to run next to Minho and smiled.

We turned the corner and ran down what was like a long ally.

"This is sector 4." He yelled and I nodded.

He stopped and I stopped behind him.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

" this is sector 7. It's not supposed to be open till another week." He said and started walking. I wiped off the sweat on my face and took a drink of my water bottle.

"It's getting let let's just go back." He said and I nodded.

We ran back the way we came but instead of going to Alby or any of the other Gladers, we ran to a small shack in the dead heads.

"What is this place?" I asked.

" this is where we record everyone entrance of the maze." He said. I walked around the table with a 3D sculpture of the maze.

"Minho this is amazing." I said and he stood next to me.

" it took me more than two years to do all this." He said and I sighed.

" well I'm gonna go." I said and he nodded. I walked out and felt a hand go around my mouth. I tried to scream but I couldn't. I got dragged to the back of the dead heads before the hand got off my mouth. I punched the person in the stomach and looked at who it is.

"Thomas I'm so so so sorry." I said and he laughed.

" it's okay. Maybe it wasn't a good idea to get you alone in that way." He said and I giggled.

" so why'd you wanna get me alone? " I asked and he scratched the back of his neck. He walked up to me and grabbed my hand. My stomach filled with butterflies I looked into his eyes.

" I like you Kayla." He said and I smiled. I haven't really thought about liking any of the Gladers..

" I like you too Thomas." I said and he smiled. He leaned in and out his lips on mine. I haven't been this happy since I figured out me and newt are really related.

We pulled away and I smiled.

" so you a newt are brother and sister.." He said and I nodded.

When we walked Into the glade Thomas pulled his hand away from mine.

" hey you shucks, Alby wants us all in the conference room for a meeting." Gally ordered and I rolled my eyes and followed him. Me and Thomas stood but the door as Alby yelled for everyone to be quiet.

" we have been informed that a sector in the maze has opened. It's too early and we were also supposed to get a shipment of feed and clothing in the box today, but never came. " people started talking and Alby yelled again.

" we also have another announcement." He said and newt walked up.

" me and Kayla just had a little meeting of our own and figured out we are brother and sister. Step of course." He said and all eyes were on me. I looked down and newt began talking again.

" so as that is p, for her safety i don't want any of you shucks to be in a relationship with her." He said and my heart sunk.

"That's rubbish!" " that should be her decision "

Obviously the Gladers didn't like it, and I don't either. I looked up at Thomas who had a frown on his face. I sighed and ran off to my room and Went to sleep.
