Ponyboy's POV
"You ready for this?" We were all crowded in the nursery because we were about to change Evellynn for the first time. I said to Darry that I would be the main man with the baby (that means to like change, dress, feed, burp, clean and what other job I need to do) but he said he will teach me how to change a baby. Actually, teach all of us to change a baby.
"Mhm..." We said unsure. He started changing her, I think everyone was gaging from the smell. Awful. How can a smell SO bad come from a baby SO adorable?
"Gross!" Steve plugged his nose.
"I'm getting' outta here." Twobit almost left but I grabbed his arm.
"You ain't leavin'"
"This is so gross though."
"Yeah but it needs to be done man." I made him stay.
"There." Darry finished. "That's how you change a baby."
"I never want to smell that again." Twobit gagged.
"Get used to it." Darry told him and handed me Evellynn.
"She should get to bed now." Darry directed me to the nursery. I laid her down in her crib and she started crying. Crying for the first time since birth.
"Why is she crying?" Steve asks.
"I dunno." I shrugged.
"Try picking her up again." Darry told me. I picked her back up and she stopped crying.
"Wow Pony, you have the special touch."
I put her back down because I wanted to test it again.
"Now, Sodapop, you pick her up." I tested. He picked her up and she stopped crying.
"Wow. Soda and Pony have the magic touch." Steve pointed out.
"Now let's see if she stops for everyone else. Maybe she just wants to be held."
...
She stopped crying for all of us. At first I thought "wow this baby loves us." Then thought "haha she just wants to be held. "
"Well if she cries when we put her down, how will she sleep?"
"In someone's arms I guess." Darry told us.
"Who will?"
"Who wants to?"
"I will." I volunteered. Steve passed over Evellynn.
"Goodnight everyone."
"Night." Everyone chanted.
Steve and Twobit said they would sleep on the floor for the first month just so if we need extra hands on deck with the baby. I sat down on our couch with Evellynn, making sure her head is protected.
"Night Princess Evellynn Dallas." I kissed the top of her head and fell asleep.
...
"I used to talk about killing myself all the time, man. But I don't wanna die now. It ain't long enough. Sixteen years ain't gonna be long enough. Hell, I wouldn't care so much if there hadn't been so many things I haven't done yet. So many damn things I ain't seen or done. That time when we were in Windrixville was the only time I've ever been away from my neighborhood. "Johnny was tearing up now, so was I. I knew it was a dream. I knew it all too well. But in a way, it wasn't a dream. It happened, he told me this. Johnny...
...
Darry's POV
"Johnny...Johnny..." I was awaken by someone saying Johnny's name. It sounded like Ponyboy. I went out to the couch where he was.
"Johnny...Johnny no.." He mumbled.
"Ponyboy?" I tried waking him up.
"Johnny..." One single tear left his closed eyes.
"Poor kid." I wiped it. Evellynn was sound asleep in his arms. "Ponyboy." I shook him gently so I wouldn't wake or shake the baby.
"Johnny, please, no, NO... Johnny."
"Come on Ponyboy, wake up, it's a nightmare!" Ponyboy used to have nightmares about mom and dad after they died. He had them for a long time and whenever he did, Soda would be there to comfort him. That time, I was reeled up in the thought of me basically being a parent, so I was much stressed and didn't really show I cared. I did though. I don't know why I was like that, but now I will always be there for him. The first few weeks after Johnny and Dally passed, he didn't get good sleep at all because of the nightmares. Poor kid.
"What's going on?" Soda walked in the room, hair all messy and he looked pretty tired.
"Ponyboy's having a nightmare." I sighed.
"Johnny..." He moaned in his sleep again. "Don't please..."
"Oh no." Soda frowned. "I'll take Evellynn to her crib because she's asleep so you can wake him up."
"Ok." I slipped Evellynn out of Ponyboy's arms without her waking up and he took her to lay her down in her crib.
"Ponyboy." I shook him.
"Johnny!" He gasped and woke up sweating. He started to cry, I pulled him into a hug.
"I'm sorry." He sobbed.
"No, buddy, it's ok." I rubbed his back like mom used to do to him when he was young to calm him down.
"I just miss him so much."
"We all do."
"I know."
"You'll be ok Ponyboy."
"Where do you think he is?" He looked me in the eyes, his eyes red and wet.
"What do you mean?"
"Heaven or hell?"
"Heaven."
"I wonder what it looks like..." He looks away. He's never talked like this before. We haven't even talked about heaven or God or been to church and if we did, we would probably be kicked out.
"You'll find out one day, but that day is very far away." I hugged him tight.
"Where's Evellynn?" He changed the subject.
"Sodapop took her to her crib a few minutes ago. You can go sleep in your bed now with him if you want."
"No, I'm gonna crash here." He laid down and closed his eyes with a yawn.
"You gonna be ok?"
"Yes."
"Ok, goodnight."
