Chapter 3 – Dan
Stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. The word rang in my ears repeatedly as I looked at the ground to avoid Emily’s gaze. Once Amber and Emily had walked down the hall and into the lounge, I slammed my bedroom door shut and collapsed on my bed.
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Oh, shut up! I thought angrily.
How could I have done that? I winked at Amber during dinner and put my arm around her on the Tube, but those could be shrugged off. But making out with my best friend’s girlfriend, who happened to be my girlfriend’s best friend? Amber was right, it was inexcusable. I can’t believe I was being so—there was the word again. Stupid.
“Daniel James Howell, you are not stupid,” I said to myself quietly. “You just made a couple of mistakes.”
A couple of big mistakes.
Didn’t I tell you to shut up? I sighed and rolled my eyes. I was being sassy to my own thoughts.
Yup, perfectly normal, Dan. Perfectly normal.
I rested my head in my hands and sighed. How could I be such a terrible boyfriend to Emily? She probably heard Amber yell “DANIEL JAMES HOWELL, HOW DARE YOU!?”, and came to see what happened. She probably had her ear pressed to the door, hearing everything we said…
Oh God. I had cheated on my girlfriend, and I wasn’t even very drunk! I had only had 4 glasses of champagne; even Emily had more than me, and she doesn’t drink all that often.
Well, I wasn’t going to deny that I liked kissing Amber. The way she kissed me back…It was nothing like when Emily kissed me. Emily was a good kisser, don’t get me wrong; it’s just Amber had a bit more passion in her kiss than Emily.
Just then, I heard music and loud, slightly off-tune singing coming from the lounge. I opened my door quietly and tiptoed down the hall to the lounge door, which was slightly ajar. I peeked my head around the door, and saw Emily holding a karaoke microphone to her mouth, dancing around and singing to Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood, Amber standing a few feet away from her.
“♫♪I dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped-up 4-wheel drive; carved my name into his leather seats! I took a Louisville Slugger to both headlights, slashed a hole in all 4 tires! Maybe next time he’ll think before he cheats!♪♫”
Unless it was my imagination, she sang this next part louder, and looked in the general direction of my room as she sang: “♫♪I might’ve saved a little trouble for the next girl, because the next time that he cheats, ohhh you know it won’t be on me. Nooo, not on me!♪♫”
I had gotten the gist. I backed out of the doorway and walked back to my room.
“I know that song,” I muttered to myself as I walked down the hall. “That’s on her Revenge playlist on her iPod.” I didn’t want to say the next part, for fear it might be true.
Emily wanted to break up with me.
