Chapter 9 – Amber

I opened my eyes, sunlight nearly blinding me. I moaned in agony and looked at the clock. Once my eyes adjusted to the light and I saw what time it was, I nearly jumped straight out of bed. “Holy shit, did I sleep that long?” I muttered, blinking a few times to clear my vision.

I got out of bed and walked down the hall, not quite sure why Emily didn’t wake me up like she usually did. I reached the kitchen and found my answer lying on the table.

I picked up the piece of paper that was in the middle of the table and read it. “I’ve gone out. I’m not sure when I’ll be back; call me or text me if you need anything! ~ Emily”

“A whole day by myself? What should I do?” I muttered aloud. Then it hit me: I could spend the day alone with my boyfriend! I picked up my cell phone and started to dial Phil’s number.

“Oh wait, Phil and I broke up yesterday…” I muttered, hitting the End button and dialing Dan’s number instead.

He picked up on the third ring. “Hello?” Dan said.

“Hey Dan, it’s Amber!”

“Oh, hi Amber. What’s up?”

“I was wondering if I could come over to your flat a bit later. Emily’s out for the day, so I figured I could hang out with you.”

“Aren’t you dating Phil?” Dan asked, sounding genuinely confused.

“No, we broke up yesterday. After you and Emily broke up. Remember, I came into your room, told you the news, and you kissed me?” He didn’t even give me a chance to ask if he’d be my boyfriend; he just kissed me.

“Oh yeah…Yeah, sure. Phil’s out too; he left a note on his bedroom door that said something about he left and he wasn’t sure when he was gonna be back.”

“That’s what Emily put in her note.”

“Huh, weird. Anyways, yeah, come on over anytime.”

“Great! See you in about a half an hour or so.”

“Okay, see you then.” We both hung up, and I ran into my room to get dressed.

45 minutes later, I was sitting in the kitchen with Dan; neither of us had had breakfast yet, and Dan had taken the liberty of making breakfast for the both of us.

“Oh, you don’t have to do this, Dan.” I had said.

“It’s no big deal, it’s just putting cereal and milk in a bowl.” was his reply.

I finished my last bite of my cereal. “Thanks Dan.”

“You’re welcome. Now, what should we do? We’ve got the whole flat to ourselves.”

“Hmm…” I thought for a few seconds. “I have an idea.”

We walked into the lounge and I sat down on the floor. “So, what games do you have?”

Dan laughed. “Well, to be honest, nearly every game you can think of, I have. What game do you want to play?”

“Let’s go with Mario Kart. I want to win.”

“Okay.” He slid the disk into the Wii and handed me a GameGube controller. “Bet you a kiss you can’t make it through the first course without yelling at me or the screen.”

“Bet you a kiss you can’t make it through the first course without saying the f-word.” I smirked at him.

“You’re on.” He extended out his hand, and I shook it.

By this time, the main menu was up on the screen. Dan navigated through the menu, we chose our characters and karts, and chose a racetrack. Dan hovered over Rainbow Road, the hardest course. “Not Rainbow Road; anything but Rainbow Road, Dan! Remember, you’ve got a bet to keep up, too.”

He sighed and chose an easier course. “Ready, Amber?”

I nodded and hovered my thumb over the green A button.

3…2…1…go! I got off to a bit of a head start, but after the first turn I ran into a wall. I nearly screamed something about gaining and then losing the lead in the first 10 seconds of the race, but I caught myself, remembering my bet with Dan.

We were neck-in-neck going into the last lap. 2 turns before the finish line, Dan passed me. I waited for the right moment, and slammed on the Y button, throwing the green shell I had been holding onto for the last lap. The shell hit him just before he made the last turn, and I passed him with ease. I crossed the finish line just barely ahead of Dan. “FUCK!” he screamed.

I smirked. “Dan, remember our little bet before the race started?”

“But I said it after the race; that doesn’t count.” He fake pouted like a little kid.

“So, I won my bets, and you lost yours. No matter what way you look at it, you’re still gonna end up kissing me.” Without giving him a chance to think about it too much, I slammed my lips against his. He kissed back, pulling me closer to him. My hands tangled in his hair, and his hands wrapped around my waist. When we pulled apart, Dan gave me a mischievous smile. “Rematch?” he asked.

“Oh, you’re on.” I picked up my controller again. “But no bets this time, okay?”

“Deal.” He picked his controller up as well, and navigated the menu again. “Same course, or a different one?”

“Different one, just as long as it isn’t Rainbow Road.”

“Fair enough.” He chose a course, and we raced again.

After about an hour and a half, Dan and I were tied at 2 races apiece. “Tiebreaker, and then we’ll do something else?” I asked.

“Sounds good to me.” Dan replied with an almost sinister smirk on his face. Should I trust him with choosing the course? I thought nervously.

Yeah, it’s fine. You’ve been telling him to not do Rainbow Road, and he hasn’t done it yet.

While I was debating whether or not he should pick the course, he had already selected it. And, since I wasn’t looking at the screen, I didn’t see which course he chose. Oh great. Now I don’t even know what course we’re on. I thought, rolling my eyes.

We chose our characters again, Dan still having that sinister smirk on his face. As our karts descended onto the course, I realized what course we were on.

We were on Rainbow Road.

“DAN! Did you have to choose Rainbow Road?!”

“Sorry, Amber. If it’s any consolation, I’m not very good at this course, either.”

“Is anyone actually really good at Rainbow Road?” (A/N no seriously, is anyone actually good at Rainbow Road bc everyone I know sucks at it, even the ones who are amazing at MarioKart.)

Dan shrugged.

We both hovered our thumbs over our A buttons. 3…2…1…GO! We slammed down on A and flew down the track. I ran over an item box, but before I could see what it was I fell off the track.

We both fell off the track at least 5 times per lap, and were neck-in-neck towards the end of the last lap. I maneuvered around the last turn, not falling off like I did on the first 2 laps. Dan, however, fell off right at that last turn. I crossed the finish line, Dan spewing profanity while I pumped my fist in the air in triumph.

So I guess this is what Phil feels like when he wins Dan vs Phil on the radio show. I thought.

“Great job, Amber,” Dan said.

“Thanks, Dan. Now what should we do?”

Just then, my stomach growled extremely loudly. “Well, that answers that question.” Dan said. “I’ll make us something to eat.”
