It was over, I hated every second of it. He wasn't my true mate. I knew what I had to do. I crept out of bed as quietly as possible and jumped out of the open window. I winced as I landed badly on my left foot. Breaking into a sprint, I headed for the trees. About a mile in this general direction was the border of our territory. I could make it... I think.
The sirens started. He's told them! The voice scared me, but I soon realized that it was my wolf, who I had only just encountered today. I tried to run faster, but my earlier injured foot didn't agree with the already fast pace I was running at. Then something happened. I heard the barks getting closer and saw lights in the distance. I was nearly there! Adrenaline kicked in and I started to run at a speed faster than I had ever run at before.
You may be thinking, why not run as a wolf, it would be much faster. The thing is, before my 16th birthday, I didn't really do my research. I have no idea if humans or other wolves live past our pack’s borders. The lights were the only indication of any life beyond our land. My mother told me stories of other packs. She herself had wanted to change packs before her 16thbirthday, but luckily when she was caught; it had been by her real mate.
Another reason I wasn't running as a wolf, was because then my 'temporary' mate would hear my thoughts. I growled at the thought of him. Between the first 2 stages of mating - Him catching me and the actual, you know... deed - I had found out his name was Danny. He was 18, which meant that he had only shifted in the last few months. That explains his speed and how none of the others were close enough to catch me.
Breaking through the trees, I realised that I was no longer on my pack’s territory. I knew that I still wasn't safe, so I kept running until I saw a house. Slowing down slightly, I took in my surroundings and realised that not only were the house lights on but a young man had also stepped out and was running towards me with a concerned look on his face.
Collapsing into his arms, I finally spoke, "Please, help me. They're going to kill me!" That was about the time that I blacked out...

When I re-opened my eyes, I was in a room. It was barely decorated and the lack of colour led me to believe it was the room of a male. Shuffling around, I realised that I was on the bed, with a thin blanket laid on top of me. My left foot was strapped up tightly enough to know it was injured, but it wasn’t in a cast; I must not have broken it.
The noise of the door opening caught my attention and I stiffened. Had Danny and the rest of my pack caught me? Was this going to be the person who had found me last night? Was I going to live? A million questions whizzed through my mind.
"Hey. You're awake. I was wondering how long it would be. You've been passed out for nearly 24 hours!" The voice of the man was deep. I shied away, still unsure who he was. "Oh, sorry, I almost forgot! I'm Josh Cooper, Alpha of the Moon Woods Pack, I found you outside the other night. You ran onto my pack’s land... remember?"
I still felt uncomfortable, but decided that answering him was probably the best option. "I remember." I mumbled, but he definitely heard me.
"It’s okay; I'm not here to hurt you. How is your leg? Our Pack Nurse took a look at it and said it should be fine, but we have pain medication if you need any?" It seemed like a question, so I shook my head. You never know if he's just working for them. 'Pain Medication' could be how they plan to kill me; I’m not taking any chances.
Whilst he walked over to the bed, I took the chance to get a good look at him. He had short dark hair, dark brown eyes and looked quite young for an alpha. The alpha of my last pack had been at least 50. He looked fairly friendly, so I decided that even though I couldn't fully trust him yet, I would at least try to be friendly in return.
