Chapter 31
“Mami!” Kai ran, grinning, to Gema as soon as she’d opened the car door. Hurrying out, Gema scooped to sweep him up, hugging him tight and cradling him close. She had missed him terribly over the last week, and she pulled back to get a good look at him. His skin was glowing, a golden tan on his features, and she covered his face in kisses as he giggled.
“Did you have fun with your cousins?” Gema asked, and Kai nodded, wiggling to get down so she set him on his feet.
“Papa!” Kai ran from Gema to Vistos,l, and Gema forced herself to look away as Vistos spun Kai in circles, his laughter ringing through the air. Papa? Well that was new.
Lana walked down the stairs of the house, looking even better than before, and Gema met her at the bottom.
“You look amazing, I hope Kai wasn’t too much trouble.”
Lana waved her away. “He was fine! Now, I want to hear all about Your vacation, but later.” Lana kissed her on both cheeks, and Gema frowned.
“Why later, where are you going?”
“Home!” Lana gestured wildly with her hand towards the house. “I want to be in my own house. This villa is gorgeous, really, but I miss my own place. Ciao, call me later, I want to hear everything!”
“There‘s nothing to tell!” Gema called to her, but Lana only waved as she made her way to her car, passing Vistos on the way and kissing him on both cheeks. Gema frowned as they talked adamantly about something, but she couldn’t hear what was being said. What was going on this time? Rolling her eyes, Gema went upstairs, fully intending on taking a nice long bath and then relaxing with her son.
Walking into her bedroom, Gema dropped her bag onto the bed and moved to the bathroom, only to stop and frown at the empty counter. Where was all her stuff? Maybe Rosa put everything away. Gema opened the cabinets and drawers, frowning even more when she didn’t find any of her stuff. Okay, this is just ridiculous. Going down the hallway, Gema pushed Vistos’ bedroom door the rest of the way open, speaking as she went.
“Vistos, none of my stuff is where it should be. All my things have gone…missing, what the hell Vistos?” Gema said angrily as she spotted her shoes in the second closet in Vistos’ room. Vistos looked up from where he was taking off his shoes.
“Ah, perfect timing, Cara, undo these cufflinks.” He told her, holding out his wrists to her. Gema fumed silently as she stalked to where he was sitting on the bed and roughly took the extended wrist.
“Vistos, this is not a game. I am not moving into this room with you.”
Vistos sighed and ran a hand over his scruffy beard. He hadn’t shaved once the whole trip, and Gema had enjoyed the rugged look on him for a change.
“Gema, it is useless to resist this. We lived together for the past week, your things have all been moved into this room already. Stop fighting me.”
Gema said nothing as she took off his cufflinks, one after the other, then walked away from him to drop them onto his desk. She was still quiet as she stalked to the bathroom, slamming the door in her wake. Who does he think he is? Making her stay in the same room as him?
“I didn’t even want to be here!” Gema said out loud, exasperated as she turned on the bath and stripped out of her clothes. Frustrated and muttering to herself the whole time, Gema soaked in the tub until her fingers were pruned and she was relatively calm again. Slipping into a t-shirt and shorts, she climbed into Vistos’ expansive bed and pulled the covers over her head, asleep before she’d even fully settled down.
