Chapter 23

“I don’t get it.” Mark commented when Gema finished telling him and Kate what happened with Vistos. “So….you took the day off yesterday to snog the most hated ex?”

Kate smacked Mark on the back of the head and they both ignored him as he cursed at her. “What he means is, what about Jamie?”

“What about Jamie?” Gema echoed. “I’m not going back to Vistos, that is not even an option.” She frowned and Kate nodded.

“Right, but I mean, you kissed another guy. Doesn’t he have a right to know?”

“Hell no.” Mark answered for her. “Why should he? They’ve only been on three dates, they aren’t exclusive! If she wanted to sleep with the mail carrier she could.”

“Okay, no,” Gema said, rolling her eyes at Mark. “But Mark is right, we aren’t together officially, so I see no reason to tell Jamie anything.”

“That won’t bother you?” Kate insisted. “Kissing Jamie after you were just kissing Vistos?”

“Who even said I was going to be kissing Jamie?” Gema insisted herself. “I’m not saying that he isn’t a nice guy but….Vistos was kinda right.” Gema added grudgingly.

“Huh?” Mark and Kate said, their expressions telling her they thought she was crazy.

“He just pointed out that, I don’t actually know Jamie very well. Yeah he’s kinda famous and he definitely has a good job, but what do I really know about him? He really could be a murderer for all I know. Or even a sex offender!” Gema exclaimed. “What about Kai? I can’t have him around my son!”

Mark and Kate exchanged glances, then Kate cleared her throat and looked at Gema carefully.

“Gem….maybe…maybe you’re just being a little paranoid-”

“What she means is that you’re making excuses not to see Jamie so you can see Vistos!” Mark interrupted, and Gema laughed.

“Of course I’m not, I don’t want to be with Vistos.”

“Honey, maybe you don’t want to WANT to be with Vistos, but you definitely want to be with him.” Mark raised an eyebrow at her, but Gema only rolled her eyes and stood up, pushing in her chair at her desk.

“No, I truly don’t want to be with him. I’m over Vistos Stakolopous, for good.” Gema said firmly, while Mark and Kate just exchanged another look.

While wrapping up a sale at the gallery, Mark nudged Gema as she punched buttons on the cash register.

“You have company.”

Vistos. Gema’s heart raced at the thought that it could be him, and she looked up as she ripped off the receipt and handed it to the customer, glancing behind her, and she spied Jamie stepping inside. She scolded herself at thinking it could be Vistos. First of all, she shouldn’t want to see him. Even after a week, she was still jumping when the door opened, expecting Vistos to walk in at any moment. And secondly, how could she have forgotten Jamie was coming to pick her up for their next date?

“I’ll finish this up, go ahead.” Mark urged, and Gema stepped aside, smiling to Jamie, who flashed her a grin.

“Ready?” He asked expectantly, and Gema nodded as she grabbed her bag and followed Jamie outside.

“So, where to?” Gema asked as they walked towards his car, and Jamie twirled his sunglasses between his fingers as he whistled softly.

“Well, I thought we’d go back to your place and pick up Kai.”
