Calum muttered a string of curse words incoherently under his breath and forced out an awkward laugh, hoping Luke would buy it, which he of course did not.
"I'm just pulling your leg, Cass." Calum mumbled quickly. Luke's eyebrows were raised as he eyed them suspiciously. Cassidy groaned in frustration and scrunched her face disapprovingly at Calum.
"Calum, it's not funny." She whined. She silently hoped that Luke wouldn't find out about her relationship with Ashton this quickly. No one knew except for Calum, Michael and Victoria and she hoped to keep it that way.
Luke was about to say something when Calum cut him off by exclaiming loudly, his attention directed to the blonde coming towards them. "Clifford, my man!"
The blonde boy took his seat in front of Calum and grinned. "What's up, Hood?"
Calum looked at Luke and grinned at the other boy in return. "We have a new student from Sydney. You'll love him."
Luke's eyes darted from Calum to the other boy as his teeth started to tug on the metal on his lip. He had always been awkward with strangers ever since that incident.
"Michael, this is Luke." Calum paused, placing a hand on Luke's shoulder and another on Michael's shoulder as he continued, "Luke, this is the Michael we told you about."
Michael held out his hand which Luke took, giving it a firm shake. "Hi, I'm the Michael they told you about."
Luke laughed at his introduction and said, "I'm Luke, the new student from Sydney who you'll apparently love."
"Oh, definitely! I will chase after you and buy you chocolates and flowers everyday, just so you would date me." Michael joked.
To which, Calum and Luke laughed so hard as Calum exclaimed in between laughter, "I ship it."
After a few seconds of laughing so hard, the laughter died down. Then it was silent. They stared at each other in silence, some occasionally blinking in confusion at their sudden silence. It was quiet. Very quiet.
Until they all couldn't stand it anymore and bursted into laughter.
"Man, I like you already" Was all Michael managed to cry out as they clutched their stomachs for laughing too hard.
Luke nodded in agreement and in that moment, Luke was happy that he found a place he could fit in, even by being himself. He knew he made the right choice by moving here to Los Angeles, even if it meant leaving all the memories behind. It's not like Luke wanted to remember those memories anyway. They were nothing but a discouragement to continue living. And Luke didn't like that. He really wanted a reason to live. At least, somewhere he could fit it. Where people would accept him for who he really is and not for his looks.
And maybe, just maybe, this was the place for him.
✌ ✌ ✌
The birds were chirping, the rustles of leaves could be heard as the wind blew and the sound of Luke's quiet humming were enough to calm someone's nerves down.
Luke was laid down on the bleachers lackadaisically, shielding his eyes from the sun that was shining on his face with his arm as he munched on a celery stick. Call him weird if you want for eating vegetables without being forced to because he really wouldn't care. He loved eating healthy. It made him feel good about himself. And that's all Luke needed in his life. To feel good about himself.
He got up as the bell was about to ring, indicating that recess was over as he started to walk to class alone. Calum and Michael had told him that they had some things to do while both Cassidy and Ashton were nowhere to be found.
As he was walking towards the laboratory for Chemistry, he saw a couple in one of the classes and assumed they were making out with the girl straddling the boy who was seated in a chair. He thought that the both of them looked familiar but since he wasn't bothered, he didn't give it much thought.
He went into the laboratory, not wanting to be late and saw Victoria waving at him so he walked up to her.
"Wanna be lab partners?" Victoria suggested as soon as he was near.
Luke craned his neck slightly and ran his fingers through his hair, quickly fixing his quiff. "Can we?"
"I mean, yeah. Cass usually sits here but I doubt she'd mind sitting with Ashton since he doesn't have a partner. He never lets anyone else sit beside him except for Cass." She explained.
Luke took the seat next to her and arched an eyebrow. "Why Cassidy out of all people?"
He saw Victoria hesitating for a while before she quickly said, clearly sounding very anxious. "Cass always gets good grades. So it's an advantage if she's your partner in anything. Besides, she's every teachers' pet. She never gets in trouble since you know," Victoria forced out a chuckle.
"She's Cassidy Brooks."
Luke propped his elbow on the table and nudged Victoria's side gently.
"And you? What are the advantages to sitting next to you?" to which Victoria laughed, saying, "Well, for one, I know a lot of lame jokes so you wouldn't get bored and fall asleep in class," as the Chemistry teacher walked in, instructing everyone to take out their notebooks and copy the notes down from the blackboard, earning quiet groans from the rest of the class.
Luke looked around and noticed that both Ashton and Cassidy were still nowhere to be found, his gaze fixed on the door. He scoffed lightly to himself as he said in his head, 'Wait, why do you care?'
Victoria noticed his distressed state as she was eyeing him after hearing him scoff.
"You okay?" She whispered, to which he whispered back, "Yeah, I'm alright" as they exchanged wide grins, the thought of Cassidy and Ashton not being in class still lingering in the back of his mind.
