"Luke, carry these inside for me, would you? Your father's gone to the hardware store to get some nails." A middle-aged woman ordered, carrying a small box of plates with the 'Fragile' stickers pasted all over it as she passed the mentioned cardboard box to a boy, who rushed up to her immediately at the sound of his name being called.

"Are these your expensive china plates?" Luke asked in curiosity, earning a small nod from his mother.

He took the box carefully and started for the door before spinning on his heel, his eyebrows raised.

"And mom?" He paused, receiving a quiet hum from his occupied mother before continuing.

"Where do I put these?" He asked quietly, but loud enough to be heard from six feet away. His mom looked up at him briefly before hauling her luggage out of the trunk and setting them on the floor.

"You can put them on the counter in the kitchen, honey." said his mother with a quiet sigh, just as a car was parking next to the curb of the house on his left.

Luke's eyes trailed after the girl as she stepped out of the car, a black leather schoolbag hung on her shoulders. She glanced at Luke, who was staring with slightly parted lips, and gave him a small smile before disappearing off into her house.

"She's cute." Luke muttered under his breath as he kept his eyes on where he last saw her, hoping she would magically reappear. His thoughts were interrupted when he heard his name being called.

He looked at his mother with a sheepish grin as she waved him off.

"Go on. You can start unpacking after you're done. Your clothes are at the stairs." His mother said, dragging her luggage along the concrete pavement.

Luke nodded, going into the house and made his way to the kitchen, placing the box gently on the counter. He, then, grabbed his luggage at the bottom of the staircase, lifting it as he walked to his new room with ease.

Luke swung his room door open, a satisfied smirk plastered across his face as he scrutinized his room.
A queen-sized bed was pushed up against the wall across the window, a black duvet draped perfectly on the lower half of the bed and two matching pillows were arranged neatly against the ebony wooden headboard. His walls were a dark shade of gray, his furniture the same ebony wood as well as the doors to the bathroom, the walk-in closet and the main room door.

His silk black curtains were pulled apart to allow light to illuminate the dark room as Luke sat on the edge of his bed, facing the window while scraping the soles of his shoes against the dark gray rug on the floor of his room. He kicked his shoes off and started to unzip his luggage.

Luke glanced out the window before letting his gaze fall on a female figure seated in a white, wooden chair with her cheek pressed onto what seems to be a book by the way the pages seem to flap whenever the wind blows.

Luke recognized the girl to be the one he had seen earlier outside as he smiled to himself, busying himself with unpacking his clothes and hanging them neatly in his closet. He then arranged his worn-out pairs of sneakers that were mostly in black or gray, including the one he had worn earlier, against the wall across the closet door.

He walked back out, grinning as he was satisfied with how everything turned out, just to be slightly disappointed when he saw that the girl from earlier was gone and her curtains were drawn.

It was dark outside. Luke checked the time on his phone and mumbled to himself.

"It's just seven." He sighed, rubbing a fist against his eye, feeling tired.

It's strange how he wasn't jet-lagged but as a matter of fact, it was the other way around. It was 12 noon back in Sydney and yet Luke was unbearably exhausted that every time he blinked, his eyes refused to open again.

But it was no surprise. Luke hadn't had a wink of sleep on the flight and the fortnight before coming here, he was busy carrying things to be shipped here in Los Angeles. His eye bags were taking a third of his face, making him look tired all day long.

Truth is, he was exhausted.

Luke decided to call it a day and catch up on the sleep he's lost.

Besides, he had his first day at a new school tomorrow and he didn't want to make a bad first impression by being late.

He got under the covers after turning off the lights, the sound of his quiet snores could immediately be heard as soon as his head fell onto the pillow, Luke falling into deep slumber.
