  His words take me aback.

  "What? Phase 2?" I ask.

"Will you please be quiet!" He grumbles, putting his hands behind his neck and closing his eyes.

I turn to all the Gladers sitting behind me. Minho shrugs. "Guy's an old prune." He whispers. I sit down and watch the man for two minutes and thirty seven seconds before he finally stands up.

"I assume you all are very confused. Scared. Angry even." He starts, folding his fans in front of him as he scans over the group.

"Oh really?" Minho says. "You almost killed us."

Rat Man ignores the comment. "I am part of the World In Catastrophe Killzone Experiment Department. Many of you know us as Wicked. But I can assure you that our research team is not as menacing as we sound. You all met Bonnie, one of our core developers of this program. She explained to you that there is a Flare virus attacking the world, and you, the immune young, are the cure. So we have set up a chain of trials. The course of your lives will determine the course of humanity. Into light, or into darkness," He takes a step forward. "Phase 2 is what we call 'The Scorch Trials'. You have successfully completed the Maze trials, but the Maze was merely the beginning of this experiment. Tomorrow morning is when the Trials will begin. We will transport you to The Scorch where it will start. You will have two weeks to walk 100 miles straight North. Those who live will have completed Phase 2 will reach The Safe Haven, where we are going to be waiting for you and transport you to your next task. You'll have whatever supplies you can find in this room to survive. Good luck."

And with that, he and his desk seem to disappear into thin air.

"Well shuck me." Minho says, getting up.

"So they just expect us to go? With only that information? What about our questions?" I ask, sitting on my bed. I look up and see a few people crowding around the food table. "Hey! Don't eat too much! Remember? He said we only have limited supplies!"

They stare at me and drop the food.

"We need a leader," I turn to my friends. "What about you Newt?"

"No no no. I was the leader of the Glade, but I have no clue what is going on here. If anyone should lead us, its Minho." He points to the boy.

  "What? Why me?"

"Look at your shucking tattoo! They want you to be the boss!"

"These tattoos don't mean a shuck thing."

"They obviously do! They wouldn't just stamp us in the middle of the night for no good reason!"

I look down at my wrist, where my own tattoo lays. To be killed by Group B. I hope these tattoos aren't really legit. But if they are.

"We're gonna die," I blurt out. The whole room turns silent.

"Well look who's Miss Sunshine today." Minho joked. But I'm not laughing. What if the tattoos really are true? What if I do die out in the Scorch? My heart beat quickens.

I throw my hand out in front of Minho, revealing my wrist for the first time. "Does this look like a joke to you?" I bark.

He takes a moment to read it, his eyes widening. "Olivia-"

"Just forget about it." I mumble. I pull my hand back but Newt grabs it, turning it for him to see.

"Why would you not tell me about this?" Newt shouts, more worried than angry.

"'Cause I didn't think it was real!" I say, ripping my arm away. "They're gonna kill me!"

"Who's gonna kill who?" Frypan says from across the room.

"Those shucking girls from Group B," Minho says. He looks at Aris. "Keep your little girlfriends away from Olivia. You hear me slinthead?"

Aris looks up at the mention of his Maze-group-people. "I know those girls. They would never kill anyone on purpose, especially not you." He says to me.

"You hope not! How do we know you won't kill her? You're part of Group B!" Newt says, standing up.

"Why would I kill her? I care about her!" Aris stands back up and faces the two boys. "Have you forgotten who I am? I saved your ass in the Maze, Newt!"

Newt leans in close to Aris's face, says something I have to strain my ears to hear. "You listen to me, okay? Never bring that up again."

Despite being confused as to what they're talking about, I speak up. "Guys!" I shout. "Aris isn't going to hurt me! I trust him!"

Newt backs away from Aris. "How can you trust him?!"

"Its because of him that we got out of there! Without his warnings we would have died there!" I stand inbetween Aris and Newt.

"Oh yeah, with his creepy mind talking shit. Because he can probably manipulate your thoughts. Don't be stupid, Olivia!" Newt yells.

I've never seen Newt this angry before. I take a step away from him. "Excuse me." I whisper and brush past him. His eyes, once full of anger, now settle to regret. He grabs my arm.

"Olivia, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to yell."

I ignore him and make my way to the bathroom, the only place where I can be alone. I rinse my mouth out with the mouthwash and climb into the shower, scrubbing at my body with a bar of soap and shampoo my hair.

Once I feel clean, I change back into my clothes and leave the bathroom. Newt is passed out on his bed.

"Pst, Olivia!" Someone whispers from behind me. I turn around and see Aris. He motions for me to come near him. I walk over to him and he guides me into the bathroom, closing the door.

"Are you okay?" He asks me.

"Am I okay? Are you okay? They were hounding you!"

  Aris nods. "Yeah."

  A moment of silence.

  "Aris?"

"Still here." He repeats what he said last night, a smile on his face.

"Talking to each other in our minds, why us? Why are we so special?"

"I'm not sure. But we knew each other before all of this. I can feel it." He says. Flashbacks of him talking to me from my dreams replay in my mind.

"I remember you, Aris." I say, looking at the ground. "But honestly, I don't know what to believe anymore."

  "Olivia, look at me,"

I glance up and see his dark blue eyes staring into mine. He's closer than he was before.

  "Believe this." He says.

And then he presses his lips onto mine.
