It's been three hours since we left Winston's body. I felt hollow inside as we ventured out into the heat of the Scorch. It was all sand. Sand sand sand everywhere, and it showed no sign of stopping.

And the heat. It was like sitting in a boiling pot of water. My hair was already stuck to my neck in sweat, dust smudged all over my face. Now, I wipe my forehead and trudge on. Newt walks beside me, it's hard for him to walk with his limp in the sand dunes. I take a small sip of water, it's barely enough to give me relief.

Heading north, I see a few buildings. They are scrawny and abandoned looking. I point at them.

"Minho," I whisper, my voice hoarse.

"Let's go check it out," He says to me. Minho whistles, grabbing everyone's attention. "Alright guys! Everyone split up and search the buildings for supplies!"

Everyone moans out an okay and we divide into threes to explore. I am with Newt and another kid named Alex.

We approach one of the small houses. There is no front door, more of a curtain. I push it out of the way and slowly walk into what looks like a living room. I try switching on a lamp but it's no use. The only light we have comes from the afternoon sun through the curtain.

The room is simple. One couch, torn up. The wood floor is littered with broken glass and blood stains, panels of it ripped out. A horrible smell lingers in the air, making me scrunch up our noses.

"I'm gonna go check the kitchen." I say and head through another curtained opening into the small room. I open the fridge. Nothing but pieces of meat that smell rotten. I decide not to take them, they probably aren't even from animals. I look in the cabinets and find some crackers and bread. Both are stale but it's better than nothing. I stuff the crackers into my sack and pick out the loaves of bread that aren't moldy. I find a couple reusable water bottles and fill them with sink water before grabbing all the kitchen knives. I tuck them into my pockets.

Someone puts their hands on my shoulders. I quickly turn around, startled. It's Newt. He looks in my pockets and my bag.

"Good job," He whispers, rubbing my arm. His eyes are swollen, probably from crying. He's lost his two best friends, Alby and Winston, and I can't imagine what thought processes are running through his head. I feel the same way, I can't stop thinking about Chuck.

"Do you think we'll make it?" I ask, looking at the ground. He tilts my head towards his face. Brushes his fingers over my cheek.

"We will." He says, and wraps his arms around me, embracing me in a warm hug. I put my hands on him and he gently rubs my back.

He lets go of me, but holds onto my shoulders and plays with my hair as he studies my face. "I remember when I first met you, in the Glade. I thought you were extremely stubborn. I swear you were asking for a death wish, the way you stood up to Gally," He chuckles, making me smile. "But when I talked to you, saw that fire in your eyes, I knew there was something special about you. I thought you were beautiful, and funny and sweet. And day after day, I fell more and more in love with you. And I'll never stop. Even through this whole thing, you'll still be my hero."

His lips find mine quickly, and I close my eyes, wrapping my hands around his neck. Warmth floods through me.

He pulls away and looks into my eyes. "I may not remember all of my life, but I can safely say that you, Olivia, you're the best thing that's ever happened to me."

I smile, speechless. "I love you." Is all I manage to say. I can never come up with the right words to express my feelings for Newt, yet he is full of them.

But that one phrase seems good enough. He grins.

"Hey guys, I didn't find anything-Oh, am I interrupting?" Alex says in the "door" way.

Newt laughs. "No, you're not. Olivia got some food and weapons. We should probably go find the others." He smiles at me one more time before letting go. I follow him out.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Twenty one of us stand in the center of the small village. Aris hasn't joined us yet, no one knows where he is.

"I'm going looking for him." I tell Minho and make my way towards the house where he is supposed to be, knowing I'm the only person who doesn't want to punch him.

"I don't think it's safe." Minho says. I pull out a butcher's knife from the kitchen and show it to him.

"If anything happens, I'll use this." I assure him before running over to the house. I creak open the door and peek in, the knife tucked into my pocket. "Aris?" I say quietly.

"Olivia, in here," I hear him whisper. I step inside and see him staring at something on the wall. I step behind him. It's a picture of a mother and father, smiling happily at each other. "Do you think they turned out like those other Cranks?" He asks, still looking at it.

  "I don't know." I answer.

He turns to me and goosebumps rise on my skin as he looks me over.

"Who were we before all of this?" He says.

"It doesn't matter." I gulp as his eyes travel along my body, and I can only wonder if he remembers the same things I do.

"I think it does. I want to know what you and I were. I remember you. I remember your gorgeous face and I remember your smile, and when I kissed you, I can't help but remember how familiar your lips felt on mine, like they belonged there," He tucks my hair behind my shoulder. "I know Newt likes you, but please, Olivia, please remember me. Remember us."

When I don't respond, he grabs my waist and brings me towards him. He firmly puts his lips on mine, but I quickly step away.

"Aris," I whisper, trying to have some sort of authority evident in my voice. "I can't do this."

He looks at my eyes, making me tense up at the affect he has on me. "I'm sorry, Olivia, but I had to do that." He steps away. "I know we had something. Please, I just want it back. I miss you, Olivia." He says. I can't ignore the hurt in his voice, the sadness implanted onto his face.

  "Aris-"

"Just think about it," He tells me, giving me a weak smile. But his eyes say something different. "We should get back to your friends."

I take a deep breath and nod, trying my best to forget what just went on between us. But I can't. I feel bad, feel like I've betrayed Newt, cheated him.

"Don't feel bad," Aris tells me, shaking me out of my head. "Just remember that I'll always love you."
