Chapter 16
~ What I'm Supposed to Remember ~
I heard a voice, a familiar voice, I just couldn't place it. It was very fait but I heard it. It told me to remember, remember my life, remember the love of the people who were around me, and that one special person.
"Remember him," it said in a calm voice. I opened my eyes, only to be surrounded in darkness, I couldn't tell if my eyes were open or closed.
"Remember who?" I replied.
"The one who you love dearly," the voice responded, "Remember love."
"Love from who?" I said, completely confused on what the voice was talking about.
"From family and friends," the voice responding again, "Remember life."
"Remember life?" I replied, "Am I dead?"
"No, you are very much alive, sweetheart," a male voice this time, a voice that made my head and heart hurt trying to remember who it was.
"Who said that?" I asked trying look around.
"Me, Anna, I said that," and a boy who looked so familiar walked out from the darkness that I was surrounded by, and close to me, a single light coming from nowhere lit the spot where we stood like a spot light.
"Who… are… you?" I asked, "How... do you… know I am... alive?" I asked looking at him. It was hard not knowing who he was, and every word he said echoed in my head and my heart, creating a feeling where I almost felt safe.
"I know you're not yourself anymore, Anna," he said, "but, I know you're alive."
"What... is your... name?" I asked the more I looked at him the more my head and heart ached trying to remember, and the more his words pulled me closer.
"My name? If you do not know, then I can't love you," he said sadly, "Even though, I love you more than anything." He turned to walk away, and I screamed, "NNOO! Don't leave!" I fell to my knees, my heart breaking inside. I didn't know why but it felt like my heart shattered. He looked back, like it was hard for him to take another step. Despite this, he turned back and walked back into the shadows from which he came. Then another voice came from behind me, a deep familiar male voice, it was hard and low.
"I told you mortals were trouble," the voice said, "I can't believe you fell for that human's tricks!"
"I DIDN'T!" I snapped back at the voice whipping around to look at him, but there was only shadow but in the shadow were two red eyes staring at me.
"Well if you didn't fall for his tricks, why are you on your knees screaming after him?" The voice replied, coming out of the shadows showing a familiar man, eyes glowing red.
"I.. don't know," I replied, "I do not know why I screamed after him. I do not even know him." The man's eyes stopped glowing.
"Do you even know me?" The voice asked, with worry now in his eyes.
I shook my head, "No, I don't," I replied my head hurting more with each word as I said it.
"I see," the man said sadly, "Then you are not my daughter standing here before me." The man turned and walked back into the shadows, I tried to run after him, but I couldn't move, and I tried to scream for him to stop, but no sound came. Only a tear from my eye showed my emotion of pure sadness. Then it was the first voice, the voice telling to remember, over and over again.
"Remember," the voice said, "Remember your favorite place, your secret place, your place to hide, your place, just yours. The place you hide away in, in hope to have silence for just a moment. The place you wished to forget so badly, because of all the memories that linger there." I looked around for what would be next, but I didn't see anything. Then, just then all of the shadow lifted, and I saw hallways of lockers, there were too many to count, and hallways of them. I saw people pass me by, I knew only a few of them, not by name, not at all. All I remembered was their familiar faces, their voices, all blending together, not at all in unison. It was like a sea of people, and I stood in front of a single locker, it was mine, or at least I think is was.
I walked over to it, not knowing at all what to do with it. I watched as another kid entered in a combination, and opened the locker door. I just guessed numbers in a sequence, familiar numbers, numbers I had remembered for what seemed like forever, but were now just a distant memory: 24-35-06. A memory so distant it was almost not even there. The lock opened and when I opened the door there was a single black cape hanging from a hook on one side of the locker, the rest of it empty. My head began to ache again, what was I supposed to do here? Why would this be important? I tried to think about it, what the voice said, remember my place. Is this it? The place that is only mine? I looked around, no there are to many people. I didn't know what I was supposed to do but I just did what was most familiar, my head aching more and more each second. I hit the back twice, the stairs falling and the secret door opening. I stepped up inside the familiar room. It was lit by candle light and a coffin lay in the middle of it all. The soft glow perfect, not too light but not too dark. I walked more into the room, looking around, closing the locker door behind me.
"I know this place," I said out loud, my head not hearting as much, "I remember, my place, my room. I remember all the time I spent here sleeping, days filled with surprises." Every memory filled with more people I don't remember. My head ached every time I tried to remember, but two people stood out the most in my memories. The two people I saw just before. The one who I couldn't bear to part with, and the one who told me of the mortals tricks. The one who called me his daughter, was in many of the memories, and the one who said he loved me in many as well.
"Child?" I heard it, very faint but it was there, "Child wake up!" and then everything began to shake. All of it melting away like blood, fading away, like it would never return. "Child!" one last time and everything was gone. I opened my eyes, to the small house I had been in moments ago, with Emilia shaking me awake.
"hmm?" I said still groggy.
"Child, it looked like you were having a nightmare," She said putting her hand to my forehead, "You alright?"
"Fine, just a weird dream," I said slowly waking up enough to remember how I got here.
"Ok, well the doctor is just outside, he will be in soon," She said walking out through the door.
I looked around. "Was that a dream?" I said, slowly getting out of the bed. I put my hand to my head. No the pain was too real, but who does that voice belong to? I looked around. I had no idea what I was looking for, but I had a strange feeling I wanted to leave. I got up to go out when I heard Emilia and another voice talking, which I assumed meant she was talking to the doctor.
"It is her," Emilia said.
"You mean you found her? The vampire princess and her Living One?" The other voice said.
"Well, not her Living One, but she lost her memory so she doesn't remember a thing."
"Then this should be easier than we expected."
"Indeed it shall."
"Just take the girl, then use her powers and dump her away, and she will not realize she has done anything."
"And use the memory of her Living One as bait. What's his name?"
"Her Living One is Kevin."
"Ah yes, that is right. Ok well we better go inside, we don't want her thinking we are planning something."
"She isn't that smart Emilia!"
I ran back to the bed and climbed back into it, and acted like I had heard nothing of their conversation, but that name, I remember it almost like a dream, it was so familiar.
"Ah, I see your finally awake now. Sorry for having to wake you up, you just looked like you were having such a terrible dream," Emilia said walking back into the room.
"Well," I stopped, this might be my only chance to escape from this place, "It was very scary, actually do you mind if I get some fresh air?" I asked planning to run as soon as I got out the door.
"Well the doctor is here, how about after he leaves," she said a little annoyance in her look, like she was telling me stay put.
I nodded my head, now I just had to be extra careful, not to let them take me, or to let them know that I know what they are planning to do with me.
