The class started snickering including Fuji and me. Soon after the whole ordeal the bell rang signaling a break, but before I left to walk around the campus someone grabbed my shoulder. I turned around to see Kikumaru and Fuji. ”Hoi, Clair, we were wondering if you could meet us after school by the changing rooms?” Kikumaru said still wearing that adorably childish grin of his.
”How come?” I asked him.
Fuji started talking.”You wanted to know what sport we played right? Aren’t you curious? You’ll probably end up meeting the whole team and make new friends, so isn’t it a win win situation for you?” Oh, he was good. He must have been one of those observant types of people. Bet you he would be on the debate team too if he wasn’t already playing a sport.
The rest of the day went by rather quickly. The classes came and went until it was finally time for lunch. I opened up my purse to grab some snack foods I had brought from home. Kikumaru was kind enough to share some fo his food with me which I gratefully accepted. A friend of Fuji and Kikumaru's stopped by towards the end of lunch. His name was Oishi, and apparently he was on the team too. He seemed like a very nice guy. When I tried to ask him what sport he played Kikumaru cut him off and explained that it was 'Top Secret'.
Towards the end of lunch I decided to take a walk around school grounds and casually said hello to students doing the same as me. The second half of the school day went by slowly and by the final bell fi I was exhausted. Geometry was the last thing I wanted to end my day with. I started making my way around the school till I finally found the changing lockers, they were right across from the tennis courts…
The tennis courts, huh? I stared at the scrapes on the court that had been left by rackets and sneakers. It had been a year, six months, and twelve days since I gave up tennis. That’s right, gave up tennis, I haven’t played since. I don’t want to get into details, but to put it simply I lost a bet. The bet was high stakes and when I lost the promise was that I would uphold my end of the deal. My number one rule is to never go back on a promise.
I stared longingly at the courts and sighed. Another rule of mine is that I hate waiting. Where were they?
“Clair you came!” A happy voice shouted.
I turned around to see Kikumaru calling to me. Behind him were what I assumed were his friends, as well as his team. Surprisingly, there were only three unfamiliar faces. I had seen most of them around school earlier in the day. I watched the uniform clad boys behind him. One stood out in particular. He had brown hair that looked as if it had been jelled perfectly and wore a serious expression on his face. He also had on thin-rimmed glasses that added to his mature-adult look he had to be going for. The guy stood out from the rest of the group somehow. I took a step towards him and held out my hand. Sure we were in Japan, but I felt like bowing to him wouldn’t be enough.
“Hi, It’s nice to meet you. My name's Clair Brown, but you can just call me Clair. You must be the team captain.” I told him, though the whole time I was smiling with anticipation. Of course I knew he was the team captain without a doubt, but I just felt a rush of adrenaline. He seemed strong. Not muscle wise, which he was by the way. The kind of strong I was talking about was leadership. Just standing in his presence I felt like I could do anything.
I stood there waiting for a reply. ”My name is Tezuka Kunimitsu and I am the captain of the tennis team. It’s nice to meet you as well.” he replied curtly.
Just as I thought the captain of the tennis te-…wait, what? What? Was he joking? Out of all the teams these guys could have been on it had to be the tennis team. What did I do to deserve this? While shaking his hand I froze it was like a nightmare come to life. I only froze for a second, though I’m sure he noticed. He was going to say something but before he had the chance Kikumaru started talking.
