Eventually the lights flickered on after Takeo had dosed off, his Nintendo dim with low battery. He woke up, wide blue eyes searching the room in fear. Li laughed,
"What are you scared of?" he asked, holding back a smirk.
Takeo glared, "I had a bad dream." He stood up and stormed out of the room, uncharacteristically grumpy.
"Don't be so harsh on him," said Makoto, frowning at Li. Li sighed.
"I didn't do anything wrong." Makoto shrugged in response, glancing quickly at me and Yaito. I suddenly untangled myself from Yaito's arms, my face red. He looked down at me, confused.
"Sorry, I was scared before," I tried to explain, but he just raised his eyebrows and crossed his legs.
"Well, turns out Az is an electrician," announced Isei as he entered the room, Azalea close on his heels. She smiled bashfully.
"It wasn't all that hard, we used to have to do it back at home nearly every storm." Isei snaked an arm around her shoulders, then asked,
"Is everyone ready for tomorrow?"
"I think the stress is getting to Takeo," replied Yaito. "He's disappeared off." Isei sighed deeply.
"I just hope we remember everything," said Makoto, worry creasing his brow.
"We've done it a million times before," Li said. "We'll be fine. And remember, the after party's going to be great." He gave a shark-toothed grin, his eyes narrowing suspiciously. Yaito stood, stretching out his lanky limbs.
"I don't think we should worry." He yawned and flicked his hair out of his eyes. "We've rehearsed a lot."
Isei nodded, letting go of Azalea and dusting himself down from whatever activities had taken place during the inspection of the fuze box.
"We should all sleep now, though. We have to be fully rested for tomorrow." He took his glasses off and examined them, his eyes looking very small without them on. "I'll be in my room." He walked out, moving silently away.
Azalea shortly followed him, explaining that she was going to say good night. Li took Takeo's Nintendo and left too, supposedly to return it to him. And thus, Yaito, Makoto and I were left alone.
Yaito looked at Makoto, then at me. He stood tall, his arms crossed and his expression unreadable.
"I think you two should talk." And with that he left, leaving us with no time to disagree.~
The rain fell outside, though it was no longer a storm. I checked the clock:
11:51
It changed, minute by minute, and still we sat in silence, Makoto staring at the ground and me staring at the clock. I fixed my gaze on the worn fabric of the rug, the pattern's colour faded from years of use.
"Well," I finally managed to choke out, "I'll go." I stood up, hurt that Makoto hadn't said anything previously even though I hadn't made an effort either.
"Wait," he scrambled up, stumbling towards me. "I'm sorry, Kimi. I'm so sorry for what I've put you through." He began to talk, his eyes moving from his hands to his feet to the wall to the clock to whichever space my clumsy body wasn't filling and oozing out discomfort. I didn't listen to a word. He looked handsome, or rather, more handsome when he spoke passionately. His eyes didn't look so black anymore and his hair didn't look so perfect. His forehead had a thin layer of perspiration glistening on it and several strands of hair stuck to it, creating small patterns with the dark strands against his pale skin.
"Do you understand?" I moved my eyes quickly to his, nodding subconsciously.
"It's okay," I said offhandedly because, truthfully, I had no idea what he had been saying. He smiled, a grateful exhale slipping past his soft lips.
"You don't know how relieved that makes me." I smiled in return, knowing I didn't need to say anything. He awkwardly hugged me, then pulled away, looking deeply into my eyes.
"I hope you'll come to watch us tomorrow. There's something special you need to hear." I wanted to ask what it was, but he turned and walked away, not looking back.~~~
