I stood there stone still, my eyes fixed on my big brother, Tobias, who was hiding behind the curtains.

There weren't many people there, and mostly they were talking to Marcus. I fought tears. My mother was gone. This was her funeral, people meandering in and out of our house, mumbling a polite "I'm sorry" or "This is a great loss". As if they needed to tell me that.

I was snapped back to reality when a hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to face a young girl, my age, looking at me.

"I'm sorry," she says politely. I smiled weakly.

"That's ok." I couldn't think. Couldn't breathe. She was gone. My protector. My only friend besides my brother. My mother was gone forever.

The girl smiled.  Actually smiled. She was smiling at my mother's funeral.  "I'm Nicole," she told me.  She was still smiling. I wanted to hit her.

"Um... I'm Amber," I replied quietly, looking over her shoulder to see Marcus staring at me.

Later that night after everyone had gone and I was laying on my bed, Tobias came into my room. He laid next to me.  I hugged him.  He hugged me. We cried ourselves to sleep. I never saw him cry before or after that day.
