I leaned against the gray speckled wall behind me and checked the time. 1:38 am. I closed my eyes and took in a deep breath before letting it out slowly. I keep my eyes closed while I listen to the woman’s voice over the intercom. After what felt like forever, I checked the time again. 1:40 am. My plane leaves in twenty minutes. I glanced up at the rows of empty seats in the airport. There were a few people waiting for my flight, but thankfully they were all older than me and too busy with themselves to realize who I am. By the time I’m on the plane there will be approximately six hours until Greyson wakes up. Six hours until he sees the note I left him. My stomach turned into a bunch of knots.
Reading that note will break his heart just as writing it broke mine.
I left it on my pillow so it’ll be the first thing he sees when he wakes up. My tear soaked note with the ink smudged. That note would change everything.
Written on a folded piece of paper were the words I never thought I’d say to him.
Greyson, I want a divorce.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
At around 10:30 in the morning I arrived in Boston. Greyson will wake up in half an hour or so. He normally tries to wake up earlier than me the first week he gets home so he can surprise me with breakfast. It really isn’t a surprise anymore, but I appreciate it.
I grabbed the one bag I packed and made my way out of the airport. It took forever to find the car I had rented. There was a girl standing outside of it waiting for me so she could hand over the keys. I called the company before I left saying I’d need one right after I landed.
I smiled and said Thank You, putting my bag in the backseat as she left. I sat in the car for a moment to think. I haven’t slept at all. There’s no time to sleep. I’m so close.
While I was resting my head on the wheel trying to keep my eyes from shutting, my phone rang. I jumped and with a shaky hand grabbed it.
Greyson.
I picked up, “Hello?”
“Do you mean it?”
Instead of playing stupid and saying mean what? and making things harder than they already are, I took in a deep breath.
“Yes.”
“But, why?” His voice broke.
I closed my eyes and pressed my hand to my head, “Because...” I tried to come up with a good reason but there wasn’t one. I couldn’t tell him it was because our sons life was in danger because then the note would be pointless anyway. If I didn’t write the note like the voice said, Jeydon would be dead. If I told Greyson the real reason, Jeydon would be dead.
“Greyson I can’t talk right now.” I whispered, digging my nails into my skin to stop myself from crying.
“Where are you?” He asked, concerned.
“I can’t tell you.”
“Are you still in California?”
“No,”
“Are you in a different time zone?”
“Greyson I really can’t tell you. Trust me.”
“Rachel, you gotta give me something. I just woke up to a letter saying you want a, a divorce, and I don’t get an explanation? Not even a little one?”
“I’m sorry,” was all I could say back without crying. “I really need to go. It’s just too much.”
“You don’t have to do this alone, Rachel, I can help you,” He was practically begging now. He sounded so close to tears, “We can get through this just like we’ve gotten through everything else. Together.”
“Greyson I’m going to hang up now,”
There was a short silence.
“Just stay safe, alright?”
“Okay,” I heard my voice break.
“I love you, Rachel,”
I hung up.
“Love you too, Greyson.” I whispered to myself.
I turned on the car and started driving, quickly stopping for a coffee to help keep me awake. My stomach was in my throat.
Half an hour until I arrive in Foxborough.
Half an hour until I get to the venue where I first met Greyson.
Half an hour until I finally get my son back.
