I awoke to be greeted by an irritating beeping sound. My eyes fluttered open. I was in the hospital once again. I see my mother crying over me. She looks so different. She looks older. Shelley stood beside her. I thought she went off to college. It looks like even Shelley had been crying a little bit.
"Why am I here?" My voice sounds so hoarse and quiet.
"Stanley," My mother wipes her face. "You've been asleep for six years. I know that may sound strange, but you tried to end your life when you were ten years old. You had done so much damage to yourself that you fell into a coma. They surprisingly were able to keep you alive for so long through the nutrition tube. Finally, they were losing hope and wanted to pull the plug. We wanted so badly to keep trying, but we thought you would never wake up. Now you're alive. You woke up just in time, I guess. When you started moving on your own, we started crying tears of joy. Now that your awake, I want to do everything I can to help you."
I start to cry, realizing I'd wasted six years asleep and in some fucked up dream. It was also triggered by seeing my mother cry. Crying is contagious. That must mean that everything that has ever happened between Kyle and I was only a dream. That whole time. Does he even still care about me anymore?
A few hours later, I hear someone knocking in the doorway. Kyle."Stan!" He nearly fell to his knees making his way over to me. He held on tightly to me. "They told me you were never going to wake up. I kept coming back to see you and you haven't died yet, and now you're awake and alive! You're still my bestfriend. I never wanted to replace you."
"You have no idea how much that means to me." I smiled. "Where's Kenny and Cartman?"
Kyle shrugged a bit, still lightly holding on. "Kenny never came back like you had said. He died when that bus hit him. Things never felt the same when Kenny left and you weren't able to hang out, obviously, so Cartman and I grew apart. We never really got along from the start so we figured we might as well give it up. I knew you were going to come back. I knew I would always have you."
I hugged back tightly. He shook in my arms. "Kyle, why did you stay with me for six years?"
"Because you stayed with us for all this time. Plus, we've been friends since the beginning and I'd never let anything break us apart." He smiled at me
I knew I shouldn't try to say anything about us, or anything that had happened in that dream. So I stayed quiet. I couldn't help falling in love with him, but I could maybe try accepting that some things were never meant to be. I don't want anything to change. I'm sick of change. Kenny's dead, Cartman's off somewhere doing who knows what, my dad really is dead, my uncle is still in jail, everyone had grown up since I was last awake. The last thing I need is to ruin a perfectly good friendship that hasn't changed at all. I want to keep it that way. I'll get over it. I just don't need anything else going to shit.
