Danny's POV

I'll give them that, the lads actually seemed to have done something with their time. Mark had polished the riffs at the intro of the new song we'd written, and Glen had been working out the chorus with him. It was nowhere near finished, but it was as good a good start as any seeing as we'd been 'working' on the next album for the past six months. I hadn't exactly helped with that...
"Hang on a sec," I stopped them playing halfway through the first verse and picked up the keyboard and stand from where they were placed by the door. Turning it on, I played a couple of chords before pulling out my trusty blue notebook and laying it out above the keys, flipping to the page where I'd first begun to outline the lyrics of the song. The lads quickly caught onto what I was doing, and Glen began to beat a rhythm. Mark began the intro and I carried on in the background, starting to sing as the verse came in.

"All her life she has seen
All the meaner side of me
They took away the prophet's dream for a profit on the street..."

I caught Lena's eye and she smiled wide, listening intently.

"But she's stronger than you know,
A heart of steel starts to grow..."

As we came to the end of the song, Glen stopped playing and both Mark and I followed suit. "Play that intro again Mark," A frown crossed Mark's features, but he did as asked, and I clocked to what Glen was on about.

"It doesn't sound quite right..." Mark seemed to agree. He frowned for a moment and then began to play again, the notes slightly higher this time. "What about that?" I nodded.

"Yeah that's a bit better." My fingers ran across the keys gently and I looked up to meet Lena's eyes. "What do you think Lena?" The dark green orbs widened in surprise and her mouth dropped open into an O shape.

"Um...I dunno..." She raised an eyebrow at me and I smirked, beckoning her over. I stood and offered her my seat. Mark and Glen gave me incredulous looks, but Lena sat apprehensively. "Are you sure about this?" She questioned nervously, fingers resting lightly on the keys but not pressing down.

"Yep." Sam let out a laugh at my response and Lena reached out to touch the notebook that I'd left on the keyboard.

"May I?" Her eyes were wary, and when I nodded she gently took the book in her hands, fingertips barely touching the cover as if it was the most precious thing in the world. I suppose to me it was. Lena scanned the handwritten lyrics carefully, as if she was memorising every word, and traced a finger over the notes that I'd written in the margins regarding key and tone. The handwriting changed often, where Mark and Glen had added verses or notes, suggesting lines for the chorus or chords in the intro. "Is that a G?" She pointed to a note which I'd scrawled above the first line. The letter was slightly smudged, and I nodded with a wry smile.

"Yeah, I think so." Lena placed the book in her lap and looked at the keys, a frown forming on her features.

"Um...I think it's a little too loud for the lyrics..." She commented. "As in, the words are really soft and quiet, but all I can hear is the guitar...Not that that's a bad thing." She added quickly as Mark opened his mouth to reply. Lena continued. "Maybe you could do the intro on the keys instead?" I glanced to Glen, who shrugged.

"Give it a go then," He remarked. Lena's eyebrows furrowed for a moment, then she began to play. The tinkling of the keys was a pleasant, familiar sound, and the chords echoed around the room. Mark raised an eyebrow as Lena concentrated, struggling to remember how to play chords, and I smiled, memories rushing back of the same girl, bruised but smiling, as she played a nursery rhyme on my piano. It seemed like an age ago, but here she was, playing my song. I saw what she had meant then as I recited the lyrics in my mind; the piano was a softer sound, gentler.
The atmosphere suddenly changed as Mark and Glen picked up the tune on guitar and makeshift drums, and I grinned at them both. Lena turned to me as they continued, unsure whether to play her own tune or attempt the more complex chords that she struggle with. I knelt beside her at the keyboard, lending my own hands to the keys and smiling as the song came together, Mark and Glen starting to sing the first verse.

"Sing," I mouthed as Lena looked at the lyrics in my notebook. She glanced at me, fear evident in those eyes I knew so well, then blushed a gentle pink colour before beginning to sing.

"All his life he's been told
He'll be nothing when he's old
All the kicks and all the blows
He won't ever let it show

'Cause he's stronger than you know
A heart of steel starts to grow..."

She began to trail off and I picked up where she left off, joining the chorus with a grin.

"When you've been fighting for it all your life
You've been struggling to make things right
That's when a superhero learns to fly..."

I would have continued, but Lena picked up the chorus and I was happy to just sit and watch her as she sang.

"When you've been fighting for it all your life
You've been working every day and night
That's how a superhero learns to fly

All the hurt, all the lies
All the tears that they cry
When the moment is just right
You see fire in their eyes

'Cause he's stronger than you know
A heart of steel starts to grow

When you've been fighting for it all your life
You've been struggling to make things right
That's how a superhero learns to fly
Every day, every hour
Turn the pain into power

When you've been fighting for it all your life
You've been working every day and night
That's how a superhero learns to fly,"

Our eyes met for a second and I faltered on the keys, just watching in awe until I realised that Lena wanted me to pick up on the bridge along with Mark. She let out a quiet laugh as I continued.

"She's got lions in her heart
A fire in her soul
He's got a beast in his belly
That's so hard to control
'Cause they've taken too much hits
Taking blow by blow
Now light a match, stand back, watch them explode

She's got lions in her heart
A fire in her soul
He's a got a beast in his belly
That's so hard to control
'Cause they've taken too much hits
Taking blow by blow
Now light a match, stand back, watch them explode, explode, explode, explode

When you've been fighting for it all your life
You've been struggling to make things right
That's how a superhero learns to fly

When you've been fighting for it all your life
You've been working every day and night
That's how a superhero learns to fly

When you've been fighting for it all your life
You've been struggling to make things right
That's how a superhero learns to fly..."

I finished the last two choruses in harmony with Lena, the final note on the keys lingering in the air. Sam applauded quietly in the background, and I smiled as Lena blushed, bumping me with her shoulder playfully. Music never failed to make me happy, and neither did Lena.

Yep! Update time! I've been writing nonstop all day, whether that be essays or this. (Tbh I've done a bit more of this than my essays...but I'm in a good mood!)
I'm also in quite a patriotic mood today - I'm part Irish, and listening to The Script all day, paired with writing this, not to mention the fact that I'm watching Ireland vs France in The Rugby World Cup at this very moment, has put me in great spirits! The final whistle just went and its 24-9 to Ireland, despite the fact that too bloody many players have gone off injured! The atmosphere looks amazing though...SORRY! Getting off-topic!

Anyway, I split this chapter into two because I didn't actually mean for it to be this big...oops! However, I'm kinda happy with how it turned out, and the direction it ended up going in has actually meant that I can get on with the main plot a lot faster than I would have been able to before! Yay! It means you won't all hate me as much!
Next update should be coming within the next week....(I know I'm a liar so don't get your hopes up!)

But for now, well done for reading this far, thanks so much for sticking with me, (I know there's only a few of you) and please please please vote and comment! Seriously it makes my day seeing your votes and comments, plus it tells me that I'm not imagining you guys...
As always...
