The one week I had left until the next school term started was slow, pitiful and mainly spent volunteering at the Minton retirement village for the elderly.

"Good morning!"

A women old enough to be in care herself, had greeted me the first time I had walked in, eyeing me and my crutches carefully. The wiggle of her eye brows gave me the sense that she was going to tell me that I was too young, that I had to be over 60 to be in the home.

"Hi. I, was just wondering if I could volunteer. I have some time before school goes back and quite frankly nothing to fill it with. I'd love to help out of there is anything I could do."

She nodded and searched for a sign in form amongst all the other files scattered messily on her desk.
She kept glancing back with Eagle eyes set sternly on me, expecting, I was guessing, for me to start throwing water bombs all over the place. Something that I wouldn't doubt the kids of Jourdan to do.

"Here" she stood up stiffly and leant over the thick counter to reach me.
"Just fill it out and give it back. Then you can go in."

I sat down in one of the several chairs that lined the reception walls, taking a pen that sat motionless atop the purple counter. I scribbled down the information required in its places, and left the paper and pen next to the computer for the lady who was now on the phone.
A much nicer lady with a younger, more appreciative attitude called out.

"Are you volunteering dear?" She asked.

"Ah, yes." I answered.

She strolled over after picking a box of name stickers from the draw and pulled one off the long string of silky paper-like ribbon it was attached too.

"Name?"

"Audrey"

she handed back a sticker on her pinky that had my name scrawled in neat black marker. I plastered it onto the front of my shirt, smoothing out any creases left by not touching fabric.

"Just go through that second door."

She gestured towards it and nodded, smiling briefly before returning to her desk.
The second door led me into a room of six or seven old people, sitting separately in different chairs, and two assistants, pottering around and pouring tea that wasn't wanted.

"Who are you?"

A tall dark skinned man asked from the right hand corner, his dark curly hair a stand out in the room of gentle floral colours.

"I am volunteering."

He too gave me a suspicious look, questioning the honesty in my words.

Jesus people, can't I just help the elderly?
